The Persian Empire, 2500 years ago, was an empire of desert and rock, and the center of the world. Darius ruled his empire from Persepolis, the heart of an empire spanning thousands of kilometers. Ancient Persia was ten times the size of modern Germany, and in many ways one can say that it was the forerunner of the Roman Empire.
The Persian kings guaranteed peace and prosperity to the Greek cities within their sphere of influence. But they took away Greek political independence, above all the right to wage war on their own account. These things damaged the Greeks’ self-esteem. They wanted to be free. Alexander the Great was determined to make this dream of freedom come true. He didn’t have much time, he would die young. But in his short life he achieved more than any other commander before him.
