Bad science, but good fun. Entirely watchable.
I’m not sure… first I thought ‘What a giant pile of c***’ ;-) But actually now, after thinking about it, it is a good documentary… about preconceived conclusions, confirmation bias, disingenuous arguments – and really bad science. Notice how little time the sceptics and real scientists got? As if the makers of this … whatever this is – thought ‘Good god this is getting silly, let’s give Michael Shermer a few seconds to lend a little sanity.’
No wait, I was wrong! They actually found some piles of rubble in the jungle that look exactly like some other piles of rubble… ON MARS! Incredible. And that’s not all! There’s even a set of stars – picked completely at random – out of millions of stars in our galaxy that amazingly look like just that before mentioned rubble!
I’m a believer. How much are those books again?
lol
Im not sure why people are saying this is bad science – perhaps thats what they said about Charles Darwin or Michael Faraday.
Science deals with facts , the facts are that most things we accept are just mainstream theorys.
There are huge gaps in our knowledge about ancient civilisations or our own origins.
Science never accepts people with hypothesises that do not fit the accepted mainstream theorys very easily. An interesting follow on to this film are anomolous achaelogical objects which really exist and have been found all over the world which no one can really give a definitive explanation for.
Its my belief that alien cultures have visited this planet in the past and continue to do so even to this day – there are sightings almost everyday worldwide.
Our race may just be like some polynesian island amongst many and our culture still not far advanced.
You’re right about that there are facts, and science needs to interpret those facts to come up with a theory that explains how those facts came to be.
So aliens coming to earth influencing humans actually would be a viable theory. But there are others.
Take the pictures in the sand. Von Däniken states that there is absolutely NO way around the fact that those had to have been made for someone that could fly. Sure, I’m no expert on ancient cultures but my common sense tells me that this is not the only explanation. Many cultures (if not all – I actually do not know) believe that their deities reside in the heavens – as in above – meaning, probably pretty far away. For you as a believer in those deities wanting to communicate with them, it makes sense to draw really large pictures in the ground. That’s what I mean when I say that this documentary is disingenuous. They portray the facts in a way that the audience is pushed to a specific conclusion.
Look at the two theories we have now:
A – the people that made those drawings were trying to communicate with aliens
B – the drawings are of a religious nature, intended to please or communicate with their gods – no aliens involved.
Both A and B would explain why the drawings were made. What we need to do is decide which theory is more likely, given the limited evidence that we have.
In my mind, that clearly is B.
With that I do not mean that I absolutely reject the possibility that there were aliens. All I say is the evidence does not support such a claim at this moment – not by a longshot.
Honestly, I would really like the idea that there ware aliens, that we’re not alone and that we might someday meet them. But noone should let their personal preference or wish for something to be true influence their way of interpreting the evidence.
That would be a good theory of why every single argument in this documentary – except for the few seconds they gave to the sceptics – is put to the audience in a very biased manner.
Another theory would be that the people in this film actively want people to believe them so that they may sell more books, making it little more than a long commercial, manipulating people to get their money – and that, to be blunt, would be pretty despicable for anyone that call themselves scientists – or decent human beings.
You decide which one of those is more likely.
It sounds like you are a bit biased in your opinion on the matter. So, you are going to find evidence to support your beliefs as well. As for the pictures with odd shapes in the sky; why do they look very similar to today’s UFOs that are readily reported? You are just spewing out exactly what the main stream media wants you to think. Oh, and a lot of the ancient cultures believed that their Gods where inside physical things, eg: the sun, trees, the earth, the wind etc etc…so not always up in ‘heaven’ as Christians would tell you.
Tentatively accepting the explanation without the baseless assumptions can hardly be called a bias.
If I’m not mistaken, there are reports of UFOs of many different shapes and sizes. That doesn’t make it too hard to find some UFO that look like – well, whatever you want. (confirmation bias)
And lastly, I am not *spewing* anything. I am having a conversation. But maybe the main stream media just wants me to think that too.
I watched it, and had fun pretending for a while. Just can’t overlook all of those hasty conclusions, and exclusive statements.
Way more watchable than most conspiracy docs.
I thought this one was great. I don’t understand why everyone is saying that all the facts are wrong, most of the things said are just theories or opinions. Just as valid as other people’s ideas. I tend to agree with most of the film. Why is religion so believable but aliens not?
Both are not.
And: I never said the facts were wrong, just the conclusions they come up with.
The reason aliens are impossible to religious fanatics is that the existence of aliens , and for sure the interaction of aliens with mankind in the past , immediately give rise to an explanation of our origins that completely debunks every religious explanation of our origins.
We can’t have that, that would mean that religions are wrong. It would be very destructive to, my brother for instance, if you took away his entire definition of existence. He, as an example, would crumble apart knowing that reality as he knows it is base on a lie. How would he function from that point forward?…….religions are historically responsible for creating and keeping the population ignorant of the truth due to their self righteous arrogance.
I do not know your brother. I personally would rather be unhappy than base my happiness on a speculation – or an obvious lie, like some religions I could mention.
Humans are pattern seeking animals. We want to understand, to have explanations. That’s what brought us to where we are as the dominant species on the planet. In addition, we make stuff for purposes. Everything we create has a purpose. So it was natural for our ancestors, in trying to understand the world around them to think of it as having been created. The next questions were inevitable: Who created it, and why? So, just like Douglas Adams’ famous puddle, waking up one morning, wondering why the hole it is in fits it so well, we thought the everything was created just for us.
And since we just can’t stand NOT knowing things, many people jump to completely made up conclusions, because they make them feel good, special, or just because they can’t think of any other explanation.
The question everyone must ask themselves is: Are you content with the easy way to know things – making up an answer yourself or believe what some preacher says – or will you take the more difficult road, accepting that for some things, we don’t have explanations yet, and that there is a way to learn about reality, called science.
This is a very interesting and informative documentary. When I visited the museum in Baghdad and Babylon (in the ’60s, it was claimed that ancient Baghdad lit their streets with electric lamps at night, and I saw gears which were claimed to be parts of a computer and the jars which were said to be used for generating electricity. The skeptics of this film, most of whom have never traveled further than their back yard, are living in a state of denial.
“WHICH WERE CLAIMED” “WHICH WERE SAID” How does that constitute conclusive proof to you? And the Baghdad Battery has never been proven to actually been for using electricity. What you’re saying right now is “I heard some things I thought was cool, based on absolutely no evidence, so whoever disagrees is in denial.” Ask yourself what are the facts, and what is the evidence. You’re just making assumptions based on assumptions now. That’s no way to reach a reasonable conclusion, or to do science. You’re being gullible.
kinda makes you wish you had a time machine, doesnt it? it seems likely that someone in the ‘primative world’ would have been able to use basic charged electricity with enough random chance involved, but its still so easy to believe that advanced cultures where involved. personally i am on the fence. i have learned never to underestimate human ingenuity vs applied technology. but at the same time, some of the claims are hard to piece together with a direct chain of logic and events. could be a huge misunderstanding, or an early age di vinci at work. if there are aliens out there looking out for us, i would certainly like a word with them.
us as human beings are believers in what we are taught. we are also creatures of habit. and we do not take kindly to change in our lives after something has been taught to us from the beginning and thats what we think is right. just think if we grew up being taught that aliens mutated our dna and mutated us into the society we are today and that they created us in their image and that they will one day return to us we would totally believe that stuff. and when some one brought up god and jesus and deciples and all that stuff we would be like no! thats not it that cant be thats ridiculous and so on. so you see its all what your raised to believe unless you are raised with an open mind and without fear of ridicule. then perhaps you take on different views. people say i dont believe in aliens or any of this crap but its as equally silly to say you believe in god. who is god? where did god come from? who created god? what, did he magically get created out of thin air and then automatically know he needed to create the earth and humans all of a sudden and then he said oh i need angels and all this stuff? not knocking anyones beliefs but just saying its as silly to say aliens are not real and cannot be real and at the same time saying you believe for just as mysterious of an event just with a different twist. its completely anal retentive to think were the only ones in the universe considering how big it is. and thats just what we can see of it. its like a small ant deep in a jungle thinking theres no possible way for humans to exist. well we do exist obviously, but how would they know that if no contact ever took place and the ant never left its ant hill. silly right? and how does an ancient culture have an understanding of astronomy and advanced mathematics?? thats crazy. how do ancient peoples accomplish things back then that we find difficult to accomplish still to this day. and if you take a look at the sumarian texts it tells you basically flat out that E.T.s were here. now isnt it rediculous to not believe that but believe other writings like the bible? just dont knock the aliens folks, thats all i can say.
