The Ascent of Man is a remarkable thirteen-part documentary series produced by the BBC and Time-Life Films. First introduced in 1973, the documentary series is standing the test of time with its popularity. It has been considered by many as one of the most influential and mind-opening pieces surrounding the evolution of man.

Jacob Bronowski wrote and presented the film. He has received praise for his highly informative yet simple analysis throughout the film. By speaking directly to the viewer Bronowski adds a personal tone to the documentary. A book based on the series was later released, titled The Ascent of Man: A Personal View by J. Bronowski. It was basically a word-for-word transcript of the television episodes. It is a little harder to comprehend as the images from the film do not accompany it.

Travelling around the world, he brings to light our greatest achievements and lowest depths. The Ascent of Man traces the development of our human society through science. It takes us on a journey through time as it examines mankind from the ape we once were to the technological geniuses of today.

Anthony Hopkins introduced each segment for the initial broadcast of the series. Another interesting fact, Pink Floyd wrote “The Narrow Way” which is featured on the series soundtrack.

I first read the book this series is based on not over a month ago and got as far as the 5th chapter. The video was much easier to watch than read, so I watched the whole series instead of read all the chapters.

The series is basically a reading of the original book, with some passages missing from the commentary but a lot of content is still in the series.

I recommend reading the book first, then watching the videos as a revision.

TLDR; Very good, but book is better.

      thanks for these.
      I watched all of them.
extremely interesting and informative all the way through. even though quite a few years old, the commentary is absolutely still relevant.

I saw this when it first came out. It transformed the way I look at the world. I would recommend it be seen several times over the period of a lifetime.

      Bronowski was a great man.

Love the early Pink Floyd background music lol. Seriously though this is a classic series, 5/5 from me.

rod, calm down. this was made in the seventies and by and large the points are valid.

When it first came out in the late seventies, it molded my view on man’s journey from prehistory to modern times.  Now that I’ve seen it again (and realize that Jacob died shortly after the filming)  I have a deeper respect for his genius and humanity and passion to get his message out.  He was a rare Renaissance man that brings depth and compassion to the human condition based on evidence and not speculation based on a supernatural explanation.

Well said! A rare Renaissance man, indeed.
