Baraka

Directed by Ron Fricke this non-narrative documentary is unique. Baraka has no storyline, plot, dialogue, voice-over or actors. So now that I have eliminated most of what is usually included in a film, you’re probably wondering, what does documentary and with good reason.
Baraka which means blessing in a variety of languages uses different themes to stimulate emotion with the use of pure cinema. Like looking through a kaleidoscope, this exotic film collects a series of global natural events. It was the first film in over 20 years to be shot in 70 mm Todd-AO format. Baraka will have you glued to the screen with its mesmerizing imagery.
This extraordinary documentary covers everything from churches, religious ceremonies, ruins, breathtaking landscapes to the vibrant cities thriving with life. Baraka is like no film I have ever seen, although it has been compared to Koyaanisqatsi. Using time-lapse photography it represents the pulse of human nature as we battle through our daily activities.
There isn’t a stone left unturned as it features images of poverty, concentration camps, mass graves, water falls, forests, village dances, strip mining, the list goes on. Baraka is a film that you must see to truly appreciate it’s worth and message.
