      Bloody Cartoons takes viewers into the impact surrounding 12 drawings published in a Danish provincial paper. What were these drawings and why were they so powerful? How did they manage cause confrontations for this small country with Muslims around the world.

      In September 2005 immense controversy was created over 12 cartoons that were printed in the independent liberal daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The cartoons were of prophet Muhammad. The cartoons were motivated by the problems the publication were having finding artists to illustrate a children’s book about Muhammed. Out of fear of being attacked by religious extremists artists were reluctant to submit their drawings.

      Critics claim these controversial cartoons were both Islamophobic and racist. They defend the controversy by saying it is an expression of both a society and political system that is continues to grow more hostile towards Muslims. On the other side, supporters argue the cartoons purpose was not to attack the Muslims. Supporters say the cartoons were instead an expression of freedom of speech in a Western Democracy. A democracy where cartoons of religious prophets are printed frequently.

      The film travels to France, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Denmark and Qatar interviewing some of the people who played important roles during the cartoon disaster.

      I wouldn't apologize either, bunch of idiots. Its just an excusse for them to be violent in my opinion. Allah doesn't promote arson or murder I don't think.Christians forgive and accept any one to their religion, whats with this excuse of a holy war, infidel crap.

      In Denmark the produce some drawings, muslims are offended, than they go on destroying buildings and cars and killing eacht other in there own country.

      Christianity in large parts of America(esp, the southern states) is a bastion of intolerance, and the bigotry against Muslim people is beginning to remind me of how the Germans and many Americans saw Jews in the 1930s.
      Th fact is, there are bigots and idiots and extremists in both religions. The Iraq invasion was seen by the neoconservatives and Bush etc as a Christian crusade – and a million Muslims died.

      Yet it's Muslims who are portrayed as an evil cult.

      As an atheist, I don't think any religion is healthy – but I'm not a bigot, nor am I easily manipulated into believing that all Muslimsa are evil because of the actions of a tiny minority.
      I believe that while misguided, the vast majority from both religions are actually good people.

      Those who quote the violent parts of the Koran seem to forget that the same rhetoric is in the bible.

      …wetern (christian) and muslim retorics and actions are the same of course – this is obvious especialy when you pay atention to ideological dogmatic fundamentalists (this term can be aplyed as widely as you wish – and thats the catch)
      When you look at the wide picture it becomes totaly clear that this conflict is amongst almost the same cultural paterns based on basicaly the same religion (diferences are only in details).
      …so when you see the image of an enemy, you might be looking at your own miror image…

      1) Killing or violence should not be justified under any circumstances, and yes that includes all religion. Violence is immoral, inhumane, and causes social instability. thus using violence is a crime.
      2) According to the Chinese, a cult is a group that’s “dangerous”, “unwanted” and carried “brainwashing” theories.
      ) Extremism is a term used to describe the actions or ideologies of individuals or groups that lean towards an extreme end of a moral/social value/indoctrination which lead to their actions not justifiable by common people.

      To the western world, that’s exactly what they see on TV. Criminal+ extremist+ cult. No matter what religion/group they represent, these kind of fundamentalist hateful actions should not be correct under any circumstances. I wish the people being brainwashed by their religious doctrine could understand how delusional they are and stop hurting others on minor offense such as making fun of their imaginary god.

      P.S. I know how bad it feels when people make fun of my imaginary friends ^^ but that doesn’t mean I have the right to hit them.

      Well, I guess the guys from the Danish paper now know that “freedom of speech” is not infinite. Those journalists never realized that one cannot (CANNOT) go around hurting the beliefs and sensibility of 1.4 B people without paying a price :-) As I see it, “freedom of speech” is violated as words (or images) are used to lie. Every person who reads on the life, values and beliefs of the Prophet Mohammed knows that he was a great peace maker and had a priviledged intelligence and sensibilities (moral, social, political, military AND religious). It is something very sad to see how (supposedly) educated Danish can depict such a person in the way they did. If the responsible had apologized, I am sure they will be pardoned. All the best.

      It is a picture… did we behead sinead oconnor for tearing up a pic of the Pope? No, she was just publicly shunned. SHUNNED, not stoned, not imprisoned, NOT KILLED.
      It is a young religion though. Hopefully it will grow into something less hateful, more enlightened

      I am loving that South Park repeatedly includes religious images. I am also loving the fact that when comedy central blacked out the images, their employees openly called them out on it on air. I dont think they are heros, but i dont think there is anything wrong with what the creators of south park are doing. Someone needs to stir the pot in the other direction once in a while

      A really interesting discussion thread by westerners and the occasional muslim.

      After being married to a muslim for sometime now, the most significant thing I realized is that much of what you are today is a reflection of your upbringing–what your family taught you and the society you were raised in. Many things we ascribe to ourselves, we had no choice in or have been narrowed by the culture and society we live in.

      Had my husband been born in my country, he would have grown up to be a fervent christian rather than a fervent muslim, but highly religious nonetheless.

      I am a Muslim, and I love the Western and Far Eastern Culture. No Muslim I know and none of my Family members, neither mine, nor my wife’s, hates the Western Culture. Instead we plea to our leader to comply with the Western culture of Justice. According to Russel Peters, “your media only shows you the Red Necks of Muslims” Most probably a few thousands. But there are 1.2 Billions Muslims, you can expect all Muslims to be evil can you? A Muslim scholar once said “In the West I see Islam but no Muslims, and in the Muslims countries, I see Muslims but no Islam”.

      But I have to say that this documentary is very biased. It shows peaceful educated people from around the world vs the low class uneducated violent extremists of the Muslim side, of course the West thinks of us as war mongers, you only show the weirdos of Muslims. What about people like me, what about the Saudi Interreligion dialogue, what about the call for peace from the elite and the educated class of Muslims. There is more to us than just the poor uneducated class.
