Boldly Go

For years humans have been fascinated with travelling to space. Apollo 11 launched on July 20, 1969 marking the first successful land on the moon. Neil Armstrong was a hero as he stepped foot on the moon. Fast forward to today and we are still examining new ways to travel to space. But what if we wanted to travel further, deep into space?
In this episode, the BBC examines the tools we will need in order to travel deep into space, to read other stars. They offer an in-depth look into the Voyager spacecraft a current machine travelling around space. The problem with this amazing spacecraft is how slow it currently travels. In order for it to reach our nearest star it would take about 25,000 years.
As technology and time progresses, scientists are coming up with alternative and quicker ways to travel in space. Solar sailing is a new possibility that could potentially reach the closest star in just a few decades. It’s truly a fascinating spacecraft.
An astronaut accounts first-hand what it’s really like to be launched in a space rocket. He describes the experience as horrible and extremely uncomfortable. The astronaut assures us the reward of reaching orbit though, makes it worth it.
Boldly Go where no one had gone before as the BBC explores new and exciting methods of space travel.
