Imagine if you live in the Mayan Kingdom a thousand years ago. Your king is Yax Kuk Mo and he has captured many lands. You go to the ball game in your local arena and enjoy a game that looks very much like modern day soccer. Except, there are consequences for losing worse than being ridiculed on ESPN or having your million dollar contract bonus become vulnerable. No, back then the losing team lost their heads. Literally.

This is an eye opening documentary about an ancient culture that has become nearly lost.
This GROUNDBREAKING, EARTH DIGGING documentary, ANCIENT REFUGE IN THE HOLY LAND is a tour-de-force.

Using cutting edge technology, archeologist Richard Freund follows a trail of dust and bones back to the Holy Days of the Jewish Temple to challenge many perceptions we have about that time period: including whether Jesus even existed.

I really enjoyed this documentary – and, as someone who has gone to Jerusalem, I loved learning more about the generations who walked in our shadows. Whether you are an atheist or an ultra orthodox Jew, Jerusalem humbles with its sheer history and reverence.

However, for 25 centuries the Parthenon has been in fires, wars, vandalized, and restored using methods that left the statues in worse repair than they were found. In this groundbreaking NOVA full-length documentary, we get a first hand glimpse into 25 centuries of history!

A mighty team of architects and engineers descend on the Parthenon to try and unlock its mysteries. So little is actually known: how was it built, for example? And, how was it built so quickly? “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” but the Parthenon went up in just a few weeks. An incredible accomplishment for even today’s standards. By whom? These questions are analysed like never before!

The legendary lost city has been more of a fable than actual truth in recent years. Atlantis was said to be destroyed by a devastating tsunami many years ago. But with the use of satellite photography and underwater technology, experts may have already found proof that this ancient city actually existed.

Exploring the marshlands of Spain, to the south of the country, the team from National Geographic matches geological formations to how Plato has described this lost city. The team cites Cadiz as the area where the city may have most likely submerged using satellite maps and digital imagery taken between 2009 and 2010.

Many children dress up in costumes and go door-to-door saying “Trick-or-Treat”, some dressed in pretty princess costumes and others competing to see who can appear more ghoulish. There’s Halloween parties, decorations, movies, costumes, treats, etc. the list goes on. But where did it originate from? How did it become the monstrous event it is today?

The History Channel takes viewers on a haunted hayride in this spooky adventure of The Haunted History of Halloween. It examines the origins of the celebration. Harry Smith explores the mystery of Halloween as he dives into approximately 3,000 years of excitement that traditionally unravels each year. As the leaves begin to change and Fall embarks upon us, so the spooky stories, costumes, and decorations.

The Haunted History of Halloween reveals how several religious groups have attempted on many occasions to co-opt the festival. Smith unravels like a mummy the several layers to the spooky holiday and how it has changed over the years. Why do we carve pumpkins? What are the significance if any, behind them?

Sit back, relax and grab a few treats while you divulge into the history of the entertaining holiday. Take a moment to reminisce about your favourite Halloween tale. For me, there is one particular house that haunts me to this day, it still sends shivers up my spine when I think about it. I crept up the stairs with my brother, openly for what I thought was a decoration to jump out and scare me. I don’t think my feet touched a step as I leaped down them screaming. The memories of a great Halloween.

This riveting documentary presented by the History Channel captures the period in time between the Fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Middle Ages. The Dark Ages is a period spanning over approximately 500 years, so while it might miss the odd detail or two, it still does an amazing job of providing a in-depth introduction the a very large part of history.

The Dark ages were remembered as an unfavourable time as the West was on the verge of a complete collapse and when the barbarian warlords weren’t fighting the Muslim invaders, Byzantine armies, and the Viking hordes they fought each other. The film recreates the period in the late 5th century A.D., just after the fall of Rome. The Roman Empire in the West had fallen and a battle between the Vandals, Goths, Lombards and Franks had broke out to divide up the fallen empire.

In the East though, it was a different story. What was left of the Empire lived under Emperor Justinian who became obsessed with reconquering the West and recapturing Rome. The Dark Ages continues to cover everything from King Clovis’ kingdom under the Merovingian dynasty to the Viking raids along the English and Irish coasts.

This is a great film for any student of history.

Lagos, Nigeria is considered an urban community, and yet the conditions there are most extreme for any human being. It’s a far cry from how the rest of the world lives. How has the conditions in Lagos changed when more than five decades ago, with only 300,000 residents, it was considered one of the loveliest places to visit.

Today, Lagos is overpopulated with 16 million people and it’s still growing in size, while every inch of its land is being occupied with structures. Lagos is stuck and can’t progress or function properly. The city that was once revered over fifty years ago has really lost its oppulence and loveliness.

This documentary gives us the realistic glimpse of how its 16 million citizens are living under grave conditions, going to the backbone of the country and looking into the scavengers who will take anything from the dump.

This documentary is presented in three parts, taking the viewer through a journey of Lagos, from its glorious days to what it has become today.
