In this hysterical documentary, Terry Jones takes us back to the medieval times and teaches us many things we did not know. Some of it is factual, others are clearly made up for fun, and none of it is boring. Fans of Python will delight in his sketch comedy, while animation enthusiasts are in for a real treat, as well. Jones shows that people were much healthier in the medieval times than we thought. They were also quite literate, politically motivated, legally adroit, and proud of their homes. The revolt of 1381 is used as a launching point for Jones to teach us with his laughter.

This documentary impresses us. It uses sketch comedy quality costumes and set design and things are done very tongue in cheek – yet there is an incredible intelligence that shines through and a remarkable array of research was clearly done before the cameras started to roll.

All efforts were taken to make sure that the trial was not a monkey trial but a real airing of philosophical differences, morals, and what we want from our society. This dramatic footage is not for the weak, the timid. It’s the real footage of some of the biggest monsters whoever aired. And yet, perhaps this is exactly for the timid, the meek, the followers: for them to learn and for this to never, ever happen again. NEVER AGAIN.

The Nazis made a very aggressive push to bomb London into the ground. They unleashed an air strike that proved deadly for thousands of Brits. Few could have guessed how bad the bombing would be. Fewer still could have predicted that Great Britain would keep a stiff upper lip and, led by their new leader, withstand the Nazi assault and begin to mobilize their own counter attack. It begins with The Battle of Britain, wherein two pilots reflect on their experiences during these battles.

The footage has been pieced together, lovingly, to create as clear a picture as has ever been made. The documentary looks at footage from the Brits, the Germans, and everyone in between. Civilians, Army, and from the sky, sea, and earth.

Europe was all a-tizzy over the proliferation of witches. Accusations (we will assume they were false) and the trials (not that they were very fair: throw the witch in the water. If she sinks, she’s innocent. If she floats: drown her) let to massive burnings at the stake, torture, and the destruction of families and communities. The directors asks the simple question: is there a connection to be made between modern day violence against women and those heretic days of yore?

The Japanese surrendered in 1945 after two atomic bombs were dropped on their cities. How close were they to developing their own atomic bombs? New evidence points to the Japanese being just WEEKS behind the United States to develop the first atomic bomb to be used in warfare.

Since the end of WWII, conventional wisdom claimed that Imperial Japan was years away from building an atomic weapon. Japan’s Atomic Bomb shatters that view. However, new research and physical documents now paint a different picture. What would have happened if the Japanese had struck first?

Using once-secret Japanese wartime documents, this special offers evidence that Japan had world-class nuclear physicists, access to uranium ore, and cyclotrons to process it. They devised an innovative way to deliver the bombs using 400-foot long Sen Toku submarines, capable of carrying and launching airplanes. Most startling, just six days after Hiroshima, Japan tested its own atomic device on a small island 20 miles off the Korean coast! The sobering conclusion is that Japan may have been just weeks behind the U.S. in the race for the bomb.

In the 1940′s and 1950′s, the American Government self-produced a barrage of films that told us how to live and what to think. The Atomic Cafe looks at this propaganda and – with the luxury of time and knowledge – shows us what the government was really telling us, often against their better judgement.

There were many lies being told and these are exposed in spades. Films about how to survive an atomic bomb going off in your classroom by huddling together near the wall. In another sequence, a pack of pigs are dressed in Army uniforms and left to die at “Ground Zero” during a nuclear test to see if human beings (who purportedly have the same skin consistency as pigs) could survive. The Atomic Cafe goes on for too long. I recommend watching the beginning and then moving on to something else. Which is what you can easily do on Documentary-Log.com!

Imagine if you live in the Mayan Kingdom a thousand years ago. Your king is Yax Kuk Mo and he has captured many lands. You go to the ball game in your local arena and enjoy a game that looks very much like modern day soccer. Except, there are consequences for losing worse than being ridiculed on ESPN or having your million dollar contract bonus become vulnerable. No, back then the losing team lost their heads. Literally.

This is an eye opening documentary about an ancient culture that has become nearly lost.

We love our classics: Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations,” Beethoven’s 5th and 9th Symphonies, and the visual feasts of Picassa and Van Gogh in their finest hours. But, humanity likes imperfections, too. “There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in,” Leonard Cohen once crooned.

Sometimes, the unfinished classics are even more revealing: for what they tell us about their author and about ourselves. The stitches of a genius are easier to see on the canvas.

Host Alastair Sooke takes us on a Sherlock Holmesque adventure through the mysterious appeal of the unfinished masterpiece. We look at Charles Dickens’s “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” and pieces by Jane Austen and even William Shakespeare. Sometimes, ghost writers attempt to finish a work after an author has passed. Steven Spielberg did “A.I,” for example. But, not clearer example would be The Diary of Anne Frank: a purely private, unpolished, and unfinished journal. The fact that there is no ending makes it one of the most powerful endings – if not the most – ever written.

So, pull up a chair, make some tea, and join Alastair through history as he tracks down the ghosts of genius tries to figure out the endings.

What does this tell us about ourselves? What, indeed!

BBC HAS MADE THIS DOCUMENTARY UNAVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

It takes into account the many casualties of war, of children becoming orphans or wives becoming widows. It explores the triggers of war, which some say is driven on hate. And for as long as that exists, it may be impossible to attain peace in this world.
