Where do they see us going? This conference will get your mind racing about the possibilities! They see technology being handed over to the individual and culture becoming less and less relevant. An example is music: a top song is not as influential as the market fractures and individuals become more independent. There’s a family culture, work culture, hobby culture: they see us splintering into smaller and smaller groups and having bigger and bigger influence within these sub niches.

The Colour of Beauty is about race and racism in the model industry. Black History Month just passed (I’m writing this post on March 5th), so what better time to keep the conversation going? Equality isn’t a One-Month-A-Year Problem: it’s something we need to understand and remedy in all seasons. I’m a white male, by the way. This isn’t bias. This is common sense.

Filmed in 2010, The Colour of Beauty is a 20 minute documentary that packs a punch for a film about pretty little things. The cameras follow Renee Thompson as she tries to make it as a top fashion model in New York City. Stunning, confident, likeable, smart, she’s got it all. But, she’s black. And in the model world that makes it harder. Agencies don’t often hire a black model. While there are a few at the top (Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks), there are extremely little one notch below. That’s because black girls who do make it are supposed to be like “white girls dipped in chocolate.”

What is the colour of beauty? This film got me thinking and I hope it gets you thinking, too. Hey, even if it doesn’t: it’s filled with some gorgeous and brilliant people in the fashion industry: from the shoes to the hairdoos. That rhymes.

He soon realises he is being thrown in the deep end; expected to compete against nine full-time professional wrestlers in an over-the-top rope rumble match in front of a live, sold out crowd at Bournemouth’s Pavilion Theatre. Adam is forced to change his entire daily routine and train harder than ever before if he is to stand any chance of succeeding in the ring. Who said wrestling was fake?

This heart felt and hard hitting documentary shows us what it’s like to be a teenaged girl. I happen to be a guy and so I found this documentary remarkably informative for understanding women. However, if you are a girl then this documentary BECOMING 13 will likely occupy a special space in your heart as you recognize your own experiences.

The clever documentary follows three 12 year old girls for one year; ending when they are thirteen and very much in the throws of puberty. Peer pressure rises, bodies expand and grow, and yet the biggest influence is not peer pressure or hormones: it’s the family unit. Using ‘diary cams,” the cameras are able to enter a very private world and show the viewer what it’s like to be thirteen and a girl.

I greatly enjoyed seeing all aspects covered: not only sexual, but confidence and leadership building, dealing with responsibility, etc.

In the 1940′s and 1950′s, the American Government self-produced a barrage of films that told us how to live and what to think. The Atomic Cafe looks at this propaganda and – with the luxury of time and knowledge – shows us what the government was really telling us, often against their better judgement.

There were many lies being told and these are exposed in spades. Films about how to survive an atomic bomb going off in your classroom by huddling together near the wall. In another sequence, a pack of pigs are dressed in Army uniforms and left to die at “Ground Zero” during a nuclear test to see if human beings (who purportedly have the same skin consistency as pigs) could survive. The Atomic Cafe goes on for too long. I recommend watching the beginning and then moving on to something else. Which is what you can easily do on Documentary-Log.com!

When Tickell began filming, our reliance on oil was not in the news. This was before BP, wars in the middle east, and gas prices that could bankrupt a billionaire. And so, it’s a delightful journey to see. Slowly, people start to agree with Tickell that something needs to be done. Scientists start finding solutions – but will the oil industry sit by and let this happen? With a shrinking economy, struggling car industry, and an unemployed nation: do we have the stomach to fast ourselves off of oil and – perhaps – save the planet? The film never dwells on the negative, but instead shows us the easy solutions already within our reach.

To me, Life In A Day is – beyond a shadow of a doubt – the best documentary film of 2011. The fact that Life in a Day was not nominated for an Academy Award leaves me livid.

I understand why it wasn’t nominated: first, it is genre defying, mind bendingly well done. It isn’t a traditional documentary – and that’s where the Oscars usually like to dwell.
Second, there really isn’t a solitary director and vision. The beauty of the documentary is that all the footage was shot in one day by people all over the world. Ordinary people. Real people. The cinematography is therefore completely unedited, raw, and inspired.Because the footage is from everywhere there is no plot. This is truly ‘life in a day’ and the semblance of a plot, if there is one, would be that the footage follows a morning – midnight beat.

Lastly, the documentary was produced by YouTube and Ridley Scott. YouTube: that cesspool for copyright infringement is no friends to the Academy – as much as they use it for free advertising. And Ridley Scott – who won Best Picture for Gladiator – is perhaps too much of an action Director for the people in charge of choosing documentaries to take seriously.

But please, please, please watch this film. Watch it alone. Watch it with your loved ones: your children: your parents: your girlfriend: your boyfriend’s best friend.

This is such a human and beautiful film.

Cure for Love is a full-length documentary about a controversial evangelical movement that claims they have discovered the ‘solution’ for turning gay men into ‘normal’ heterosexuals.

If just reading the above sentence made your blood boil, this documentary is for you! Obviously, there is something very sinister being wrapped up with the shawls of religion. This tragic, sometimes inspiring documentary follows several gay men who are trying to start their lives over as non gay. They are at odds with their religion, their minds, their body. They are being torn apart by a Church that is trying to save their souls. Powerful watching! This documentary is from 2008. Evangelicalism is alive and well!

This visually sumptuous documentary shows the director on a journey along the hills of India. It’s about the marginalized, the weak, the ones living in sub human conditions (there are millions of Indians like this).

While India is predicted to be a super power in 10 years, there are whole segments of the popular that will not enjoy these rewards. India is still very much a castre system.

After taking us through haunting stories of abuse and poverty that have never been told to the Western World (there is a community that survives by eating rats for three meals a day), the director follows a group of almost 100,000 strong who are planning a non-violent strike in 2012.
