The Colour of Beauty is about race and racism in the model industry. Black History Month just passed (I’m writing this post on March 5th), so what better time to keep the conversation going? Equality isn’t a One-Month-A-Year Problem: it’s something we need to understand and remedy in all seasons. I’m a white male, by the way. This isn’t bias. This is common sense.

Filmed in 2010, The Colour of Beauty is a 20 minute documentary that packs a punch for a film about pretty little things. The cameras follow Renee Thompson as she tries to make it as a top fashion model in New York City. Stunning, confident, likeable, smart, she’s got it all. But, she’s black. And in the model world that makes it harder. Agencies don’t often hire a black model. While there are a few at the top (Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks), there are extremely little one notch below. That’s because black girls who do make it are supposed to be like “white girls dipped in chocolate.”

What is the colour of beauty? This film got me thinking and I hope it gets you thinking, too. Hey, even if it doesn’t: it’s filled with some gorgeous and brilliant people in the fashion industry: from the shoes to the hairdoos. That rhymes.

This is a 30 minute documentary filmed in 2008 that follows a suicide group workshop. All of the participants have made multiple suicide attempts. Nothing is working: not drugs, not therapy. So, what’s next? using animation and real footage, Drawing From Life follows the group for 20 weeks. Some of what happens is tragic and some is truly uplifting.

Surprisingly, this is an uplifting documentary that is worth seeing. It will make you understand extreme depression and self destruction. Understanding is the first step to a cure.

This heart felt and hard hitting documentary shows us what it’s like to be a teenaged girl. I happen to be a guy and so I found this documentary remarkably informative for understanding women. However, if you are a girl then this documentary BECOMING 13 will likely occupy a special space in your heart as you recognize your own experiences.

The clever documentary follows three 12 year old girls for one year; ending when they are thirteen and very much in the throws of puberty. Peer pressure rises, bodies expand and grow, and yet the biggest influence is not peer pressure or hormones: it’s the family unit. Using ‘diary cams,” the cameras are able to enter a very private world and show the viewer what it’s like to be thirteen and a girl.

I greatly enjoyed seeing all aspects covered: not only sexual, but confidence and leadership building, dealing with responsibility, etc.

This is the true story of a teenage boy dealing with the lost of his mother to cancer. To cope, he chooses a unique subject for his first assignment after the death of his mom: Dr. Max Gerson’s claim that he has discovered a diet to cure cancer. If he has discovered this cure, then why did his mom die?

Garrett is a boy who has always been close to nature. He lives with animals and is very sensitive to their nutritional needs. Now he is troubled and looking for a cure for his dead mother. This is touching and fascinating! Miracle.

Jiddu Krishnamurti is a regarded as a thinker and philosopher, one of the best ones in the world, in fact. His teachings were not centered on religion or even philosophy. But what makes him believable was that he talks about daily concerns that actually affect our lives such as overcoming fears, hurt, sorrow and burden in order to achieve happiness.

Krishnamurti knew of the human mind like no one can and stressed on the quality of our spirituality through meditation.

This documentary is a collection of videos on some of his teachings.
