Challenger, Go For Launch

January 28, 1986 was the tragic day that Shuttle Challenger left Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Flight Center. It was a mere seventy-three seconds into flight that the Orbiter Challenger exploded over the Atlantic. The result was saddening, as all seven of its crew were killed. But could this tragedy have been avoided? Could these seven deaths have been prevented. The BBC will reveal that the shocking answer is yes in their riveting documentary, Challenger: Go For Launch.
This was to be the Challenger’s 25th mission and was considered to be operational. A friendly bus ride through space if you will. Despite a clear warning to stop the launch one year prior NASA chose to go ahead with it, sacrificing these seven lives. A cold-related failure of the aft joint seal in the right Solid Rocket Booster was the cause of this tragic accident.
Challenger: Go For Launch features interviews with many of the key players who made the decision to go ahead with the launch. The skilled professionals who pleaded for the launch to delayed due to faulty o-rings are also showcased in the film.
While the film is unpleasant to watch as the Challenger explodes, it is an informative and important documentary to watch.
