In another part of the Cosmic Journey series, The Asteroid that Flattened Mars it examines the red planet, Mars. Approximately every two years, the planet Mars comes its closest to Earth, roughly 36 million miles. It is when Mars reaches this point that we attempt to reach it. Since the early 1960s we have attempted 46 times to send spacecraft to Mars. Over half have failed at launch or upon arrival. Meanwhile the rest have flown around the planet taking pictures and recording data.

Some have landed on the red planet to test its soil. The hope is that one day these probes will pave the way for humans to travel to Mars to dig deeper into the planet’s mystery. We yearn for answer to the pressing question of whether the planet had ever developed far enough for life to exist on it. If this mysterious planet had life at one time, could there still be traces of it? Is it possible for life to exist again?

Many theories exist around this mysterious planet, but astronomers yearn for proof of these theories. As technology continues to progress the proof we’re looking for might be closer than ever. Will we find life on this cold planet?

Well, yet another potentially good documentary ruined by this narrator. :33 seconds is all I could take of his voice.
