Now more than ever, scientists, astronomers, and planet hunters are all on a serious mission, but for what? The race is on to find other Earth-like planets. Are there other planets that exist in which we could survive? Could there be Earth-like planets already in existence where there is life?

Astronomers have recently discovered there’s a whole galactic real estate out there, but they must determine if these planets are habitable zones. Another important factor is how we will get there. Scientists will need to develop a spacecraft that is able to transport humans to these other planets and at a reasonable speed.

NASA is currently aware of 403 objects in which they consider exoplanets. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Wide Area Search for Planets (WASP) they are doing their best determine if these exoplanets are Earth-like.

Many researchers have revealed that the Earth as we know it will come to an end eventually. Every theory is different, bringing attention to a variety of possibilities as to how and when it will occur. The similarity between all of the theories though is that they say the end is inevitable. Perhaps this is why the race is on to find other Earth-like planets. So, if the world does sadly come to an end there is an alternative.

Visually stunning as well as scientifically satisfying. There are several other “Cosmic Journeys” docs on various subjects relating to the universe and how it works. They are all of as high production values as this one. Usually they run between 16 and 20 minutes per subject.

Makes me think we’re all going to die from some galactic catastrophe.
