Theologian Dr Robert Beckford investigates amazing parallels to the Christ story in other faiths, some of them predating Christianity by thousands of years. The Hindu god, Krishna, was conceived by a virgin and his birth was attended by angels, wise men and shepherds. Buddha was also the result of a miraculous birth and visited by wise men bearing gifts. Beckford attempts to unravel the mystery of why there are so many versions of the Christ story across the world and asks which is the real one.

the religious texts, written by men, are the only thing we have to give us a concept of God. What God do you believe in that is not suggested to you in some way by religious texts? And, if you claim your beliefs in a God have nothing to do with man made dogma; that you somehow miraculously discovered the idea of God without any outside influence, what about the 99.9% of religious people that do base their faith on these texts?

We cannot divorce the contemplation of God from the writings about him unless we revert to the most basic prehistoric shamanistic beliefs that everything in nature possessed a spirit that could be appeased or angered.

For me, the film was worth watching for two reasons;

1) The information about Kashmir traditions about Jesus, which I had never heard before; and which I will be researching,

2) Yet another example (at the end) of how what is going on in Israel is not much different than what we called Apartheid in South Africa

Other than that, I thought it was a fairly well done introduction to the subject. But I would have liked to have seen more about how all these faiths and stories were rooted in ancient sun worship and astrology.

My main criticism of the [facts] presented would be with the section on Ghandi. I'm fairly certain that Ghandi got his ideas about passive resistance from Thoreau and Tolstoy. I think his praise of Jesus, though probably genuine, was more about appeasing western nations than the founding spark of his philosophy.

I might also add that the Comparisons of Ghandi to the Messiah (as the Gospels portray him) is a little much. I'm no expert on Ghandi, but I seem to recall that he kept several young girls around him that he slept naked with every night. And, although he recieved the best available medical care during his hunger strikes, when his wife was deathly ill he decided she didn't need any doctors to interfere with the will of God(s)

What strikes me most about the subject is that it has been so thuroughly supressed thru out the centuries. I have been an avid reader for 30 years, and I didn't learn about these things till about 10 years ago. And I have never known anyone personally that wasn't surprised (or called me a liar) when I mentioned it.

If the Christians are so sure its all lies, why don't they confront and disprove it instead of keeping it hidden away for 2000 years? Of course, the answer is that, like science; if it isn't in the Bible, it cannot possibly exist - and therefore must be ignored and violently refuted regardless of proof to the contrary.

Could have been a good documentary but much too preachy to the point of being annoying. At times, he was more interested in babbling about his own ideas rather than let the people he is interviewing express theirs. Instead of trying to shove his opinion down the viewers' throats, he should present the facts and let us form our own opinions. I'm surprised he spoke about Osiris and not Ra, although Ra has more similarities to Jesus.

Chapter 1 of the Zeitgeist movie is a really interesting examination of humanity's major religions and compares some relevant dates with the corresponding dates of the earth's movement around Sun.

Although I'm not sure what to make of this movie as a whole, this part is pretty convincing.

It starts at about 00:13:30;00 if you want to skip ahead.

I found the doc interesting but not as interesting as the comments. It seems that, at least with religious based docs the commenters who don't want to except the message attack the messenger. It's particularly relevant in this doc showing historically Christians have done this for 2000 years.

Thanks Cbat and Pluuu for giving us a modern example of an age old tradition.

if god is perfect why did he make such a mess like earth and humans? Sorry to burst your bubble, but god is a myth. Tell me, where is heaven, what is heaven, specifically. Where is hell? If god is almighty and all powerfull why does he let war continue? why doesn't he show himselsf to be real and appear before us? Oh,, thats right, the bible says he comes to judge and end the earth. If he loves us why does he have to come with a mission to destroy the earth and the people who dont bow down and grovel to him? Why cant he simply be here and take care of us fragile misguided sinners? Because it's all a bunch of crap!

The Bible was written to put fear into the hearts of humans to force then into conformity and obedience. What a great way to brainwash the uneducated masses. "God loves you, but abide by His rules in this book or burn for eternity" (what could be a worse punishment than burning for eternity?) Oh, and by the way, you better come to church and donate money to the Lord, he needs it. And if you stray, you won't have to worry about God punishing you, the church will do it for him, we have a pole with your name on it standing in the fire!" Oh yes, if the church could still get away with murdering people to maintain control, you don't think they would still be doing it?

Sakara that's a brave statement.

Hindus in india don't kill anyone from my knowledge. In fact they are one of the most peaceful religions in the middle east.
