Does God Exist, this has been a debate that has gone on for what seems like forever. Your beliefs determine which end of this discussion you will be on. American Jewish University presented Rabbi David Wolpe and Sam Harris, both best-selling authors in an interesting debate about the existence of God and the role that faith and religion plays in our society.

Rabbi David Wolpe is of the Sinai Temple, he is the author of Why Be Jewish and Teaching Your Children About God. Whereas Sam Harris is well-known atheist and  author of his book The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation. The debate was presided over by Steve Padilla, religion editor for the Los Angeles Times.

Both parties offer their views on this controversial topic and bring valid points to this discussion on God’s existence. Whether God exists or not is a debate that will continue to go on for as long as there is religion. No one side is right or wrong, it is merely a difference in opinion, a difference in religion. Which side of the discussion do you fall on? Do you agree with Rabbi David Wolpe or Sam Harris? Does God Exist?

    • Believe without seeing

      Hello

I agree and I disagree with you

I agree on the fact that there are tons of religion and all claiming to be right. but if anybody will read and study the scriptures I'm certain that the bible condemns every religion out there. because like righteousness there is evil and a mixture bring confusion. I am for certain that most, if not all, religions stem from a true religion. and in order for all people to believe that they are true instead of the one they stem from they had to kill the original. And rewrite the history of it. Its highly possible.

The bible was originally written in Hebrew then translated into greek then to latin and finally butcher into English without even thinking it was in Hebrew first. and use english speaking gammar to translated and change the meaning of the hebrew words into endglish meaning words

but my point is that the bible prove true.

      You are right..
"if they believe so much in god Y do they run to the hospital when sick and not to the church ?"

"y do they turn to people of science to get better ?"

"y do they fear death so much if they are so sure to go to paradise ?"

but the bible answer your question "they simply to do not believe or trust in what's written"
Even the Savior and the Prophets and Aspotles believed without seeing.

People who form these religions do not follow them.

The children of israel followed Him, Call Him by His Name and therefore received blessings but they turn from Him and He allow them to suffer into the hands of the people they turn against for, to show them what sin can bring without the following of His Laws. His Name is not God or Lord. any reliable bible dictionary will tell you those are pagan titles.

I understanding what you are saying, man did make the true faith out to look like a mockery.

thats why Revealation 11 proves true about the Two Witnesses.

    • Darrin

I don't understand why these religious people participate in these debates. Virtually every debate I watch results in the theistic ideas being crushed, as happens in this video.
I'm a big Hitchens fan, and I believe this is the first debate I've watched with Sam riding solo and I'm equally impressed.

      Good watch.

This was a pretty good debate, one of the best I've seen, but I'm still not so sure about debate in general e.i. as a way to clarify what is true. It seems that in debate a lot of misconceptions of the opponents arguments pass without clarification, and no progress is made. Also, as humans we have a limited capacity to hold complex ideas in our head and to evaluate new ideas quickly.

What I would truly be interested in seeing is a debate with a giant whiteboard and markers in the hands of those arguing. This way one person can write down an idea and why they hold it, and then the other person can effectively discuss why they thinks that that idea is incorrect. I think that this would be much more productive, and increase understanding for all involved.

Sorry about the length of this, I have alot of interest in this debate and couldn't refrain from weighing in..feel free to ignore this post for its verbosity, if nothing else.

(13:10) – How can an atheist feel life is worth living? Because the alternative is a void..it doesnt take 20 minutes to debate that

(23:35)The Rabbi asks that, "if since almost the beginning of time 98% of people had a sense that there was some supreme being is evidence that its true" – I would answer that since 'the begining of time', about 97% of people had no choice but to claim they believed on pain of otricising and/or excruciating death. And 100% of people grew up in a world where they were indoctrinated into this belief from birth.

(25:45) – "It is healthy religion that provides the only means for sick religion to be well" – actually, the greatest historical combatant of bad religion was the secular logic and reason of the Enlightenment. His further comment that the history of religious conduct is exemplerary in comparison to non belief merely shows that he hasn't read any history books, or kept up with modern history..Nearly all wars were, and still are, fought for two reasons – territory (and its resources) and religion. And, even when territory is the over-riding concern, religion is generally used to stir up the masses for a fight.

“Nothing is more logical than persecution. Religious tolerance is a kind of infidelity.”
      -Bierce

(38:15) "…a society, ala America…", The original founders of 'america' – the colonists and pilgrims were a nasty little bunch of pious fanatics that didn't come here so much for 'religious freedom' as the freedom to establish their own theocracies where they could be the persecutors (of natives, catholics, jews, etc.)rather than the persecuted. The founders of the nation, in the 1770's; the key players anyway, were deists, not Christian. Deism was the religion of the secular Enlightenment. This is why we have a separations of church and state.(how did a 'Christian Nation' allow the 1st Ammend.?) It is only when Americans let their religion over ride their religion that we get atrocities like slavery, manifest destiny, segregation..etc. When we adhere to the secular principles of constitutionalism, we are much more benevolent.

(39:00) "the only trancendant idea that ties one person to another is God" – what about plain simple empathy, that is all thats required to have a concept of the Golden Rule

      (40:25) excellent observation

(42:50) Theresa spent much of her time luxurously fund raising by rubbing elbows with the rich and powerful all over the world. Which is why the church was so adamant to hide her lapse of faith – she was their cash cow. Further, her hospice in Calcutta was another "Black Hole' of death and despair where no one was offered any real medical care and. in many instances, couldn't even recieve visits from family and friends.

(43:20) In study after study, and I can show you a notebook full of them, Serial Killers were raised by strict, repressive, religious parents

      (49:50) excellent observation

(1:08:56) the story of Abraham portrays him as a righteous man..so why does he agree to sacrifice his son, why does he have to be told by an angel that its bad to do this. And, if the key message is that God doesn't require human sacrifice, why did He require the sacrifice of Jesus? Repeatedly the Bible says that Blood (usually animal blood) is a "sweet savor to the lord"

(1:17:15) Excellent comment (By the Rabbi!!) – i must give credit where its due. But i still think religion perpetuates the "otherness issue" more than any other "otherness" -" ..Religious tolerance is a form if infedelity"

(1:20:55) – (I would add)…if we are to expect any sense of validity when we critisize the absurdities of other religions, we must also look at our own with the same acumen.

(1:22:40) What does he evaluate or condemn about his own religion? His blind spot negates his argument. In his answer to the next question, he proves my point. And, if scripture was compiled during a time when people "were not morally evolved" – what authority do they have?

(1:27:35) – The rabbi's are using the 'unerring' authority and message of the Bible to denounce passages in the Bible? If God is what gives us our sense of morality, how does that sense change over time?

      (1:40:20) Another very good comment by the Rabbi–hardly proof, but its 'catchy;

I agree with Darrin in wondering why theologist agree to participate in these debates given the track record of such events.

I have to say though, that the rabbi does the best job of any from his side I have seen (the worst being Al Sharpton attempting to debate Hitchens – though Sharpton has been brilliant at times in debating more secular issues)

In the end, every 'proof' given for the existance of God is, at best, twice removed from the cruxt it is trying to prove; because it is impossible to get any closer to a creator that 'hides behind the curtain' – therefore, Mr Harris wins handily.

    • mira

      nice topic

    • jack

that rabbi is awesome! If i was some kind of spokesperson for religion or just creationism i would puch him way forward. Speaking as a reasonist, he is very likeable and his method of argument is very impressive.

As an agnostic, and i believe in answering the questions I can with science, and when science doesn’t have an answer (like the meaning of life) then religion may serve a purpose.

I do think it’s a little black and white to prescribe to one entire religion. There are too many flaws or contradictions within catholicism, hinduism and all that. I’m selective and answer one religious and philosophical question to answer with different religious means.

ex: What’s the meaning of life = Have fun while you can because there’s nothing afterwards.

I don’t need to know which religion tells me that (I don’t even know), I just believe what I want as long as science doesn’t have proof.

Do ghosts exist? Well, science can’t give me an answer so it’s fine if i believe.

Was the world created a few thousand years ago? Science CAN give me an answer to that question, so believing in young earth creationism would be stupid.

Oh and here are some ideas:

1-Religion has, historically speaking, very violent. If your religion advocates killing infidels and whatever else, then it’s impossible to be tolerant.

2-Hitler WAS influenced by the scientific practice of eugenics in Canada and the U.S. Religion may contain more morally disgusting things, but science has some too. Neither are perfect, morally speaking.

3-”Religious people are happier and do more nonprofit work” That’s because they’re brainwashed and don’t have to make any decisions for themselves. They just obey. They do more nonprofit work because they don’t want to suffer eternal damnation, or be reincarnated into a bug or whatever their religion tells them.

4-”Science doesn’t talk about goodness” Of course it doesn’t! It’s not a doctrine or some kind of text that tells you should do! It’s not a matter of choice whether or not to obey the laws of gravity, you HAVE to.

    • C

Religion loves to convince you that if you join them, whatever bad things you’ve done can be forgiven. Does this mean as an atheist I am damn to go to hell regardless if I am a good person while a Catholic priest who sexually abuses children or a serial killer gets to go to heaven if they repent?

I find it so ridiculous how people can justify their actions with religion.

My most religious friends are the ones who lack the ability to think for themselves and those who were bought up by ministers (they really have no choice). One of them even let the love of his life go because she didn’t believe in the ‘same’ type of Christianity he did. Crazy! Sometimes I still think we’re living in the dark ages.

Another friend who is a strict Taoist, said to me “you shouldn’t eat onions, shallots and garlic, they make you horny, so we’re forbidden to eat them” – yet she sleeps around in hotels so her family doesn’t find out about her double life, I guess that food theory is an epic fail.

The friend I am most concerned about is the one with a history of depression and suicidal thoughts. Everything she does, she does it because she says “God told her to”. One time she said she saw a Jesus statue talk to her! WTF?!

I realise that my most religious friends are the ones who are the most mentally or emotionally weak and unstable people I know. But I guess it beats them going on illegal drugs and alcohol.

    • r reid

Dear me, embarrassing-religion FAIL. It’s time to consign these bronze age myths to history. Intelligence and religion are incompatable. In the future people will laugh at these silly notions.

    • NONDIFENYI

There is a big difference between RELIGION and religions. RELIGION is the TRUTH or JESUS CHRIST. And religions are the inventions of men and devils, counterfeits of the TRUTH. As for science as perceived by this Harris and others like Dawkins, it is nothing short of utter confusion. True science is inseparable from true RELIGION. All the matters studied by so-called scientists are the creations of God. This subject is blatant blasphemy. What will be the shame and disappointment of these skeptics when they see the Son of God coming in the clouds of heaven! How can you deny Someone Who made you in His image initially. Your sinful minds will never fully grasp the mysteries of God. Science is one of the elements of proof of the reality of the only True God. The patience of God shall make you tremble and quake. His silence is not evidence of His inexistence. Secular scientists deliberately close their eyes to what is obvious. This is the most nonsensical documentary I have ever watched. You cannot pour water in an upside down bowl (the secular scientists are hermetic). RELIGION and SCIENCE are like the sun and the moon, The one gives the its light to the other. There is nothing eternal about sinful human beings and death is final unless Jesus Christ resurrect you. The man speaking for Christianity in this video is so far away from the standard (Holy Bible) of God. Human reason is not perfect in itself. This film is a waste of time. Your conjectures will not move the Rock of ages.

    • NONDIFENYI

All you who are so negative about Jesus Christ, Satan your father is laughing at your blindness and rejoicing over your unbelief. What excuses will you present to God for your ingratitude! What is sad about the case of fools is that they truly believe that they are wiser than their Creator (what a deception!). May God help you all before the storm of death takes you away while in you remain in your sins.

    • NONDIFENYI

Of all your friends, you are the saddest case. You have nothing to offer beside empty criticism.

    • NONDIFENYI

If you are going to post such a long reply or comment, make sure it is meaningful. One thing religion teaches is the economy of time.

    • NONDIFENYI

This is definitively the wisest comment on here. Thanks Sir.

    • NONDIFENYI

Remain in ignorance and self-deception if that is well with you but do not blame these false teachers for your loss in the day of reckoning. I guess they can also save you from death. Life is not about day-dreaming and watching T.V. and eating pop-corn.

    • NONDIFENYI

God gives wisdom and good ideas to help humans in this sin-broken world. All the hospitals and knowledge of doctors and natural remedies are His supplies. Still these do not take the place of prayer and faith toward Him.

    • NONDIFENYI

History has proved in all cases that true Christians cannot be bound by anything. Even in chains, they were free. Your reasoning is so off the mark that I will not say anything about it. You speak like a Catholic or a Muslim but never a christian.

    • Mohsin Habib

in the absence of any representer from the MUSLIMS it is not right to criticize them….

    • Jess

In the end, it comes down to one question: do you want to be happy because you believe all your sins will be forgiven if you pray and be a good christian and don’t believe when DNA tells you that all of us came from Africa and evoluted from apes, and you will have paradise waiting for you when you die (interesting that the body dies but the soul have the same capacities offered by the brain…guess material and supernatural isn’t so separated after all) or do you want to grown up, be a inteligent adult and simple see the truth? Well, I guess, without the paradise and the pretty angels and the guiding stars…the truth isn’t so great. I say, suck it up. And if you want to live your life inspired in a romance, find something more updated that the bible. Maybe a a world ruled by pink fairies or why not wizards? I kind of find Harry Potter a more interesting character than god, but hey, that is me.
But if you realy, realy need a book to say to you what you have to believe, please pick up the origins of especies…

    • Documentary-Log.com

      Great question, Jess!
