Ecstasy Rising

Roughly every half century a new major drug arrives on the scene. In this case it’s MDMA (3.4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine), more commonly known, as ecstasy. Peter Jennings from ABC News television takes viewers behind the scenes and into the world of this new drug. A drug that unlike any other, has spread like wild-fire and came out of nowhere. He takes us into its history and how it is now used by so many across the world.
The documentary aired shortly after a massive international drug raid in both the United States, as well as Canada. At least 100 people were arrested in both countries, in a fierce attempt to take down a drug, in which the government as been unable to control. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) hundreds of millions of ecstasy pills are taken each year. An astonishing two million users are recruited each year. This dangerous drug has quickly become one of the four most frequently used drugs. These are alarming and dangerous facts.
Ecstasy Rising includes a brief history of this hallucinatory drug. It examines the negative health claims that have been made by the US government. The rise of this dangerous drug is a major event in the history of narcotics. This special presentation will show that if current trends continue more than 1.8 million Americans alone will try this drug in 2004 for the first time.
Step inside the world of ecstasy.
