Terry Jones is most famous for being a starring member of Monty Python. But, did you know that he lived during the peasant revolt of 1381?

In this hysterical documentary, Terry Jones takes us back to the medieval times and teaches us many things we did not know. Some of it is factual, others are clearly made up for fun, and none of it is boring. Fans of Python will delight in his sketch comedy, while animation enthusiasts are in for a real treat, as well. Jones shows that people were much healthier in the medieval times than we thought. They were also quite literate, politically motivated, legally adroit, and proud of their homes. The revolt of 1381 is used as a launching point for Jones to teach us with his laughter.

This documentary impresses us. It uses sketch comedy quality costumes and set design and things are done very tongue in cheek – yet there is an incredible intelligence that shines through and a remarkable array of research was clearly done before the cameras started to roll.

The Life of Birds: The Problems of Parenthood follows up with our earlier documentary review of Meat Eaters. Today, we bring you the problems of being a good parent – when everyone is trying to either eat you or steal your food.

The BBC teams up with Dave Attenborough and journeys to the ends of the world to ask the philosophical question: what makes a good parent..if you’re a bird?

We watch the bird’s eating habits, behavior, and nurture. The birds need to learn how to fly, how to hunt, how to build a nest. Of course, unlike humans, birds have multiple children at the same time. This leads to a scarcity of attention. It is not unusual for more than one baby to not survive the first week. This is simply because the mother cannot tend to them all. The strongest survive.

The documentary sweeps through an awesome range of species: sea eagles, pelicans, and many, many more and offers a fantastic amount of information about what makes a good bird parent. Watch it here!

The Life of Birds: Meat Eaters. Not so long ago, the prevailing theory was that Dinosaurs were reptiles. No More. The current theory is that the vast majority of birds have dinosaur ancestors. The missing link may be by analyzing the meat eating birds. We journey to New Zealand, where giant eagles terrorize monkeys and harvest flamingos in Africa. Directed and hosted by David Attenborough, we learn about the dramatic way that birds look for food. Their hunting practices rely on super-senses that can sea in the dark and hear in silence. Relying on a combination of smell, vision, and hearing, the birds are able to use ‘guess work’ to make precise aerial maneuvers at incredibly high stakes.

National Geographic does what National Geographic has done so many times before: deliver on their promise to show viewers a remarkably scenic tour of the greatest cats in the world. Relying on the talented Steve Winter, National Geographic takes us on the hunt of the tiger. We journey to India and learn why the Tiger is disappearing from the forest. We journey to Sumatra and then to Thailand.

The footage is remarkable. You will be surprised by how intelligent the tiger can be. It learns quickly, doesn’t make the same mistake twice and knows when it is in danger intuitively. The tigers come right up to Winter and he is not afraid. They know that he is not a threat and that he is not dinner – partially because Winter knows to read their body language and retreat when they are hungry or feeling threatened.

If you are someone who enjoys learning about the dangerous, rare animal of the world and doing so from their couch: this is for you. It will whet your appetite to travel to Asia and meet the tigers one-on-one.

Steve Winter is not hurt during the making of this documentary, although he does come close on a few occasions.

Lottery Documentary: Being Scammed is an exclusive by Dateline that aired in March, 2012. This investigation shows that many people who win the lottery never get to claim their prize. Why? Because they never knew they had won. Many people find out by asking the store clerk to scan the ticket and let them know if they have won. Sometimes, the clerk lies and say they have not – then pockets the money for themselves. Dateline catches one clerk who robbed a client out of 1,000,000$

This is a really powerful investigation. It gets to the heart of the matter and catches the criminals red handed. Many admit to their crimes – mostly because the video image is so damning and the police arrests so humiliating. But the real victims usually do not receive their money. They have played the lottery and won: yet they are still losers.

We really enjoyed where there documentary takes the viewer. It asks psychological questions that get at the root of gambling, addiction, and deception.

Bob Marley Movie

A few days ago, we brought you Life in a Day and it was a huge hit! That documentary was directed by Kevin Macdonald. Now, Macdonald goes from a documentary about the entire planet to a documentary about just one man: Bob Marley.

The documentary uses archival footage of Marley that has never been seen before. Even the most die-hard fan will learn from this documentary about their mentor. Marley’s own sons – who were deeply involved – came away changed men.

Ziggy Marley said that he learned a lot about his father. “There was a lot of stuff that we didn’t know,” he said. Especially about his early years in Trenchtown.

The Marley family gave Macdonald full access to their archives. They felt that he was the right man for the job and are extremely happy with the end product.

Bob Marley was only thirty six when he died – something that seems almost impossible to believe. His songs were so wise, so ahead of their time. Now, we can enjoy him all over again.

President Barack Obama doesn’t like bullies and he wants children to know it. The President hosted the first ever Anti-Bullying summit at the White House last year. This year, he’s reaching out to all of the children who weren’t invited to the White House by teaming up with the Cartoon Network to introduce an anti-bullying documentary called “SPEAK UP.”

The President will announce that he was the victim of bullying as a child that mostly had to do with his skin color.

Cartoon Network is airing the documentary on Sunday at 5:30pm. There are many famous people in the documentary, such as tennis great Venus Williams, Basketball star Chris Webber, soccer star Hope Solo (great name!) and many others.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS takes us into the Arctic Circle and gives us a front seat view of the legendary natural light show in the sky that has dazzled the Inuit for generations. The scientific word for the phenomenon is “Aurora Borealis.” There are many explanations; none definitive. It is still not completely clear what causes the lights. So, sit back and enjoy and listen to scientists and Inuit tell stories about their best guess.

This documentary goes well with a glass of wine and a comfy couch. Watch late at night.

Sergey Yazvinskiy directs this peaceful short documentary of a day in the life of a monastery.

This is a great way to relax and center yourself after a stressful day in civilization.

With a goal in mind to show the life of a monastery, young filmmakers
from Russia living in the famous Abkhazian New Athos Monastery and
discovered a world strikingly different from the one outside its
walls. The quiet ascetic life of its inhabitants is filled with work
and prayers. They barely communicate with each other, spending days in
silence, quietly doing their work. The monks show no doubt or regret;
it seems that they possess the knowledge of a great mystery, without
which such strong discipline and devotion simply could not be
exercised. The filmmakers captured the flow of monastery life with
great delicacy, trying to seize the feeling of this mystery, which is
almost palpable in the New Athos Monastery.
