Imagine spending 7 years attempting to solve a math problem? Now, imagine spending that length of time on a problem in which no one knew if there was a proper solution to it. Would you do it? Math was never my strong subject so, I can pretty much guarantee I wouldn’t, but someone did and this documentary is his story.

Fermat’s Last Theorem tells the engaging, emotional and inspirational story of Andrew Wiles. A quiet English mathematician who was originally drawn into math by Fermat’s puzzle, a puzzle that in the 70′s was considered a joke. It was because of this that he set the problem aside until 1986 when he had discovered a link with one of the most interesting ideas of contemporary mathematics: The Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture. It got its name from young Japanese mathematician who committed suicide.

Busily working away for seven straight years trying to solve the problem, Wiles told no one but his family. That is until he solved the problem in June 1993. At last he had managed to solve the impossible or so he thought. Dr. Nick Katz made a simple request to clarify something which resulted in a hole in his proof. Wiles was sent back to the drawing board.

After shutting everything else out for over a year, Wiles had a revelation and within an instant the problem was solved and Fermat was proved. Fermat’s Last Theorem takes us there, it takes us through Wiles’ struggles and triumphs, as he achieves his ultimate dream.
