For God, Tsar and Fatherland
Democracy, what does it mean to you? Does it have the same effect in Russia as it does in the US? For God, Tsar, and Fatherland explores the life and views of Mikhail Morozov (Mikhail Fedorovich). He is a devoted Christian, Russian patriot and millionaire businessman who controls Duravoko. Known as ‘the village of fools’ just southwest of Moscow, it is here where people come from all over Russia to rid themselves of freedom.
In this riveting documentary from PBS a community who is striving to cope with the US concept of democracy is showcased. It puts focus on Mikhail who is yearning for a return to Old Russia’s glory days. He lays the foundation for a quickly expanding right-wing movement, but the question remains, will he succeed?
The Soviet Union went bankrupt in 1991 and re-emerging as the biggest nation-state in the world was Russia. Following these series of events it was assumed that some sort of democratic system would fall into place for the people of Russia. Fast forward to 16 years later and the state of this once sought after democracy is questionable. For God, Tsar and Fatherland examines this question in this informative and well put together film.
