      The BBC presents this informative documentary the coincide with Holocaust memorial week. Originally airing in January 2003, this documentary is a special Correspondent. Fergal Keane examines how a horrible slaughter, three quarters of a century ago, has returned. It is haunting the relationship between Turkey and its western allies.

      For several years, the people of Armenian have fought to have the vicious murders of hundreds of thousands of their forefathers in Ottoman Turkey in 1915 to be considered a genocide. Turkey, on the other hand, has been fighting just as hard to deny this genocide. They are so determined to make sure the term genocide isn’t associated with the killings, they have threatened any and all countries which choose to associate the word with them.

      Genocide of Armenians reveals how President George W. Bush and Bill Clinton (his predecessor) both broke their promises to the Armenian people. They had both  assured the community they would recognize the killings as a genocide and then ended up backing out. As the saying goes, it sort of adds insult to injury.

      This documentary features interviews with survivors, key political figures in the US and Turkish officials to examine the truth behind the terrifying slaughter.

        The only reason you disagree with it is because it’s the truth staring you right in the face and your country brainwashed you alongside everyone else….EVEN THOUGH there were MANY, MANY PEOPLE that witnessed what was happening to them and even WROTE about it as it was happening to PROVE THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT KILLED INNOCENT CHRISTIAN LIVES…. it’s really sad when you cover up such a horrible autrocity like that, their blood is screaming from the ground while the government stands there saying “I don’t hear anything, you’re crazy” ….I think you should learn how to think for yourself and not let others tell you what they say is the truth…so sad….

          Dear DocDanny , Unfotunately this is where I’m stuck. I do not have any documents to show you in English. Everything is in turkish. I tried to fins some documents to show to my english g/f years ago. But we couldnt find any in english. I can not prove you the anti-thesis right here. Govermental archives can be visited online. Its in english. Only there. But thank you for you understanding.
          Also one more thing,
          If there is any Jewish person who read this , and know their history, Turkish Republic, founded by Ataturk has saved over 300.000 German Jews from Hitler during the WWII. We gave them Turkish Passports and Hitler’s Germany couldnt touch them. Then we transferred them to France , got them on the ships and brought them to Turkey.Since that time , they lived in peace. So please imagine a country saves people from slaughter. Yet this country accused to saughter over 1.5 million armenians. Please everybody , think. Please.
          Also in WW1 , Anzac to invade Turkey / Gallipoli , have resufed to use gas masks distributed by English officers. They said Turks would never use gas to us. That was right. We never used gas on them. Imagine an army , doesnt kill it’s enemy in the unfair way , but the same army kills 1.5 million civilians just 5 years later. Does that make sense to anybody ?

          Thats why I strongly disagree with this video and the idea of Genocide.

        I’m not sure you even watched the documentary or have thought dispassionately about the reality of what happened. The documentary acknowledges that Armenians attacked Ottoman officials in the decades prior to the 1915. The difference is that they attacked an oppressive authoritarian regime in order to gain freedom of their own country, while the Ottoman empire sought to purge the Armenian element from its military and ultimately from its entire empire.

        One last point: you say you “didn’t mean don’t watch it,” yet in your first response to the video, you demanded that the doc be removed from the site entirely. Your response is most unfortunate, I’d say, for the Armenian people.

          1-Armenians never had a proper country.
          2-Something happened, we call it EXILE. Ottoman Army never gathered 1.5 million people and slaughtered all at once.People died in th Exile I agree. I am sorry for that but Genocide is something different.
          2-Non muslims never forced to fight for Ottoman empired. Thats fari right ? So in thet period , All muslim Ottomans were sent to battle field. From east to West North to South. Many countries fought against us at that time period. So in the inner villages , only young and healthy and strong people were non-muslims. Among all non-muslims it was the Armenians who Revolted. Revolt – in that case was a BACK STABBING. So the Ottoman Empire decided to EXILE them.
          3-It wasnt only the Ottomans who exlied them in the history, Russians and Iranians did the same too. Hope it makes some sense to you.
          4- Turkey is a member of united nations. The Act Against Genocide was voted and acceted on 11th of December 1946. Turkey was one of the Voters. No country raised at thet time and claimed that a country which Genocided another nation can not be in the same act … But for last decade it was been a propaganda war. Please see the related act.
          5-Turkish prime minister offered to Armenia to gather two historian groups from both sides and let them study on this issue. He told them History belongs to historians. Not politicians to make decisions.
          6-Our archives open to public. You are always welcome.

      So many Turkish were also killed.

      It doesn’t conceal the fact that there was a systematic elimination of Armenian Christians from the empire. Clearly that is genocide.

      It doesn’t hurt to see this from another point of view since the Turkish people have turned themselves blindsided to this.

      Even Dr. Lemkin acknowledges that genocide is the right term for what happened back then.

      Very nicely produced and informative doc about a part of history I would like to be more knowledgeable about. It’s also interesting to read the other comments.

      I think it’s naive to overlook the political point of view of the makers of the film. And genocide is a strong word to describe events that were, at the very least, less clear cut than what the Nazis sought and accomplished in Germany.

      But marching women and children in circles through the desert until they dropped is pretty hard to defend.

      assembly of the Association of Genocide Scholars in its conference held in Montreal, June 11–13, 1997, reaffirms that the mass murder of over a million Armenians in Turkey in 1915 is a case of genocide which conforms to the statutes of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. Bush to do in a letter dated March 18, 2005.”[7]
      In February 2002 an independent legal opinion commissioned by the International Center for Transitional Justice, concluded that the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in 1915–1918 “include[d] all of the elements of the crime of genocide as defined in the [Genocide] Convention, and legal scholars as well as historians, politicians, journalists and other people would be justified in continuing to so describe them”.[8]
      In 2007, the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity wrote a letter signed by 53 Nobel Laureates re-affirming the Genocide Scholars’ conclusion that the 1915 killings of Armenians constituted genocide.[9] Wiesel’s organization also asserted that Turkish acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide would create no legal “basis for reparations or territorial claims”, anticipating Turkish anxieties that it could prompt financial or territorial claims.[10]

But we do not. Because we didnt. I personally do not have de proves at home but you can check the ottoman archives. Even if I will be the last person on earth , i will deny. Because I know how we fought against enemy armies and I know how my grandfather fought in WW1. I am honored with my history.           Typical how you say I when talking about Turkey. One thing I don’t like about turks (and other countries too) is all the nationalistic pride propaganda crap. What is there to be proud of? You where just born there. You could have been armenian and you then would have had a different opinion. I don’t know the facts about this issue i’m just analysing the comments. It’s true that there’s always at least two sides of a story but we’re all humans. Don’t get caught in the politics y’all. All governements try to erase or at least deny the ugly parts of their history. That’s because History is not moral. Don’t y’all be too judgmental about a country because your country has innocent victims too. As a french, I recon my country was the first to conduct a modern genocide in Haiti under Napoleon using cheemical weapon. But the french government refuses that Idea.       I think that it is safe to say that documented proof (if any exists) of a government orchestrated Armenian genocide will never see the light of day. The evidence offered up in this documentary is mostly anecdotal consisting of pictures and eyewitness accounts remembered, and in some cases, written down by those who witnessed or were subjected to the atrocities. It is really all we have to go on, but it is certainly compelling. Unfortunately, we (as a human race) have the capacity to kill each other in the most cruel and dehumanizing ways. We also have the equally disturbing tendency to deny it, even in the face of overwhelming evidence.
      I would like to ask two questions of those who deny that what took place was in fact a genocide. What proof would be necessary for you to accept that a genocide did take place and if that proof could be provided would you change your mind?

        basically it’s all semantics, it’s just that genocide is a bad word so they don’t want to admit to it. on the other hand genocide is in historically a natural phenomenon that is merely more scrutinized the more visible it is externally.. as times modernize it becomes ever more difficult to hide these dirty secrets.

        to say they never had a proper nation is a pretty weak argument as armenians (at least by name) were present in the region prior to the turkish presence and while they were usually under the suzerainty of larger empires most of the time did enjoy periods of independence as well. who can blame the armenians for revolting against an overlord (esp. of a different and arguably oppressive state religion) during war…

        it could be argued however that the armenians weighed the costs of rebelling with the benefits… essentially it was an act of war against it’s mother state so then who is to blame the turk for this “exile” or even genocide or whatever they would like to call it.

      While watching this I was curious about what the historians were saying now about the American Indians being victims of genocide. Coincidently, I found a website that was mainly about the Armenian genocide but also had a write up about the American Indian genocide question.       I have Cherokee blood in me going back to my Great Grandmother as the last full blood Cherokee relative in our family. It’s unfortunate that I have hit dead ends during research to trace genealogy of that side of my family history. The English ancestors disowned our branch of the family because my Great Grandfather married an Indian. So much greed for land and hatred of another race for no real good reason.

      The huge amount of deaths in the American Indian population is not talked about as much as it should be. It had been going on ever since the first white person set foot on the shores of North America, Mexico, and South America. It’s like those years of deceit, murder, and the breaking of truces has been swept under the carpet of history…just like the Armenian genocide.

      It blows me away that the world mostly is fine with forgetting incidences like this. We are not going to last much longer as a species if these things keep happening and no punishment is given for the atrocities. Maybe we need to be wiped out by a comet or other natural disaster. We collectively suck as caretakers of each other and the planet. Maybe it’s time for the planet to shake us fleas off and start over.

      I am shocked that I have never heard about this!!! I met an Armenian guy a few days ago so when I saw this doc I had to watch. My heart goes out to him and his people. The Turkish people need to just admit what was done. The ones living today didn’t do it the older generation did,and as we all know, if we looked at the people in that generation, they were not as civilized as we are today. The people of that generation treated their fellow human being terribly across the board,from racism,and sexism to these types of atrocities.We,the younger generation will never learn from their mistakes unless we start getting real about what happened in the past.

      I have not yet watched the Documentary I was so absorbed with your debate. I don’t think I need to now because doesn’t everyone see what a cruel world it is Everywhere? I’m a French/Irish/Dutch/English White American female and I Know we committed genocide and continue to impoverish and attempt to ‘adapt’ these great people. There’s blatant genocide going on in Africa Right Now! Maybe the Turks learned from their mistake and tried to be better people because of it, like the Germans, like a lot of Americans but not nearly enough unfortunately and The Armenians feel strongly and want the equivalent of an apology, to be acknowledged that they are not liars as I imagine African American’s wish the title thief or whatever racist thought would be acknowledged as false. We Enslaved them. Our country is far from Lilly White but look around and notice how dumbed down we are? How easily brainwashed? My point is this: It is a cruel horrible world and a beautiful one still and honesty if you have never read Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ I highly recommend it but if everyone walked in another’s shoes; tried to really put themselves in another’s situation in this life maybe we could work towards making the world less cruel and more beautiful. Mistakes are made and should be learned from and we study History to try not to repeat mistakes, so this documentary is posted and if you wish to continue the fight then make one with evidence refuting it and let everyone be to make up their minds, not demand it be pulled.       Consider that the word “Genocide” was coined by a Jewish scholar in the late 1930s to try to convey what had happened to the Armenian race. 1.5 million people murdered by the Turks and their vassals equates to about a quarter of the race at that time.

      My grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. What as a documentary I heard in her personal accounts. 70 years after these atrocious events, she vividly remembered every horrible detail.
      The denial of the genocide is simply insulting!!!

      For all the people who responded to this, I wonder, while you all seem to disagree with genocide, how many of you live in Canada or the US. The largest genocide in history that continues on a daily basis, and not one person cares, is the native population of the “Americas”. You people who claim to denounce genocide, perhaps you should leave the Americas and stop commiting genocide. Talk about denial!!!!!!! Its ok for you to commit genocide and deny genocide, BUT its bad if other people do it!!!!!!!! People would be more responsive to your comments if you went back to you own countries and commented from there!!!

      This is my first comment in the discussion, however, I feel like I should defend the Canadians who have participated. DEZ- in regards to your comment that “not one person cares”- I CARE. I am of German and Irish descent, two of my grandparents immigrated in the 50′s and my other grandparents are 2nd and 3rd generation Canadians. I have learned in class about the horrible things that European settlers did to the Native population and I have also done my own further research into the subject. I have friends who are Native and live in a town with Native people and from my experience, I would not think that my friends would want me to move out of Canada. I was born into Canada and with that I have inherited the burden of the actions of my ancestors, just as those in every other nations have. I don’t believe that the resolution to the conflicts with Aboriginal people can be solved this way— 30 million Canadians are difficult to find homes for elsewhere. So while I do accept the atrocities that have happened I want to to be able to change the way native people are currently treated. I recently wrote a University paper in which I referred to the Europeans who came to Canada and killed many native people as “invaders”. In response, I was told that this was racist language and I should not refer to the them as invaders and was given a terrible mark. This will not change my perspective though and I will continue to refer to them as invaders because that is the truth.

      Nobody in this conversation justified what the Europeans did when they invades the Americas and killed Native people. No one in this conversation said that the current treatment of Aboriginal people is acceptable. I also do not believe that the point of this conversation was not to establish which nation or people committed the largest or most atrocious crimes against other humans, rather that it is these types of crimes that should be avoided in general.

      I agree with Lilly Newsom, we have to accept history and learn from our mistakes. These mistakes are gruesome and it is difficult to accept that humans can be so brutal, however, as Lilly said there is currently genocide occurring in Africa. I encourage all of you to do something no matter how small to help end that genocide or conflicts on smaller scales within your own countries. Personally, if I am ever a mother I do not want my son or daughter to see pictures of the conflicts in Darfur or the Aboriginal living conditions in North America and say “mummy how come this happened and how come you didn’t help stop it?”. I also want to be a teacher and do not want to have to teach the children in my class that during the Armenian genocide, Canada only accepted 1200 refugees and almost 100 years later we still are not doing nearly enough for the people suffering within our own nation and to those in Africa, Haiti, India and all other regions experiencing conflict when there could have been so many more lives saved. In doing nothing I would feel incredible shame, I hope the same would go for many of you.

      This is a shocking documentary. The Turkish state has very serious questions to answer.

      Also Turkish militarism has questions to answer concerning it’s behaviour in the Balkans, the Arab lands during the Ottoman era. And these are are also swept under the carpet.

      And in addition there is an ongoing war against the Kurdish population.

      And there is also the issue of Turkish involvement in providing military support to certain Turkic regions in central Asia where Turkey has a religious sectarian agressiveness against non-Islamic believers, and nationalistic agressiveness against Iranic peoples, Slavic people, and other non-Turkic people.

      There is also the issue of the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus, and the expulsion of Greek cypriots from the region controlled by the Turkish military. In their absence the Turks settled settled Turkish people so as to provide justification for the continued control of Northern Cyrpus. The Turkish government of Northern Cyprus is only recognized by Ankara. Everybody else finds it repugnant to human decency. Even the Palestian groupings find the Turkish state to be indecent.

      As usual, money and membership of NATO allow Turkey to behave in a shameful manner.

      Also the Syrians (Arabs) deserve to be complemented for providing some humanity towards the surving Armenians. Turkey – a country where state policy is to deny genocide – is allowed to be in NATO. Syria – a country that provided refuge for victims of genocide is on the “axis of evil”. And it seems that Hillary Clinton is OK with all of that.

      Once again US Foreign Policy is unprincipled. Well, go figure !!!

      You’ll have to damage the door knobs I’m afraid. Drill out the knob with an half inch drill, go right through the middle of the knob. When you get through the first knob stick a screw driver in and turn the knob. You can get cheap replacements from Home Depot.

      The vibration of the garage door opening and closing may have shaken the wiring loose or causes the light bulb to wear out very quickly. I have the same experience. We used appliance light bulbs and got a little longer life doing so, but the bulbs still wore out very quickly. We just gave up and do not use the garage door opener light any more.
