For someone who suffers from stuttering, getting a few words across can sometimes be your greatest nightmare. Stammering, as it is referred to in the United Kingdom is a speech disorder in which millions of people live with everyday. While trying to speak, their flow of speech is disrupted by prolongations of sounds, words or phrases, syllables and involuntary repetitions.

This inspiring documentary follows the unique and inspiring story of three stuttering children who are striving to bust out of their isolation and learn to properly speak. Over the course of a year Help Me to Speak chronicles their journey as they attempt to overcome their stammers, as they try to achieve their dreams of one day speaking fluently.

Although the stuttering is usually affiliated with involuntary sound repetition, it often accompanies the abnormal hesitation or pausing before speech. Many stammerers refer to this a blocks. The prolongation of specific sounds, mainly vowels is also common. There are many components in relation to stammering that listeners are unable to observe.  Anxiety, tension, sound and word fears, a feeling of “loss of control” during speech, and stress are just a few of the many.

Help Me to Speak is an inspirational and fascinating story into the world of stuttering.

this is interesting because i have a childhood friend that used to stutter but it wasn't this bad for him. he would get stuck making a raspy 'ah' sound over and over until he finally got it out. by now he's mostly grown out of it. it's sad to think about having to go through that everyday.

I really pity them. I hope they will recover!!!

Don't pity them. They're just like you and me. I feel for them but I don't pity them. We all have something in our lives that may be difficult for us. Don't put yourself above people who's difficulties happen to be stammering by using the word "pity."

@Nancy – “My Child Won’t Speak”, a BBC documentary on selective mutism. Sorry, we’re not allowed to post links to videos outside of this site, but its not too hard to find. Good luck!
