This is an absolutely amazing documentary. It offers a completely different perspective on mental illness as it challenges your interpretation of this disease. If you were put in a room with 10 people, some of which were diagnosed with mental illnesses and the others being “normal”, would you be able to tell who was who? Do you think you could easily distinguish the difference between the two groups of people?

In this eye-opening documentary Horizons takes viewers on a journey to discover the variety of mental illnesses out there. With the assistance of 10 volunteers, How Mad Are You? will confuse you in a really great way. Half of these 10 volunteers have psychiatric disorders, while the other half are considered “normal”. Throughout the course of five days they are put through a variety of challenges. Everything from mucking out cows to stand-up comedy.

These series of challenges are developed to examine the character traits of mental illness and determine whether these symptoms could actually be in all of is. Three leading professionals in the field of mental health are put to the test as they struggle to determine who has been diagnosed with a mental health condition. Will they get it right or will these individuals have to reveal themselves? How Mad Are You? reveals the answer.

      Joe,

I will agree that the application of psychotherapy and psychiatry require some artistic license, but to say that science is an art is totally incorrect.

This was a very enjoyable doc.

I loved how strong the line was drawn between what's on the surface versus what happens underneath.
It also made it very clear to me that a large part of doctors and psychiatrists knowing that something is wrong is the fact that the patient knows that something is wrong. It's really just up to the doctors to figure out what.

Despite the findings of this experiment I really can't reject therapy altogether. These volunteers were at point in their lives going through personal crises, they got help for it, and now they are no different than people with a history. I think that actually exonerates the the psychology profession. People are resilient and I think therapy helps speed along the recovery.

i was able to pick four out of the five from the very start. the only one that i missed was the social disorder. i thought the 4 that i picked were fairly obvious. i am suprised the experts were so way off.
