Human, All Too Human: Friedrich Nietzsche is one part in a series of three airing in 1999. It was produced by the BBC and follows the lives of three significant philosophers, Friedrich Nietzsche being one of them. The main focus or theme surrounding this series revolves a lot around the school of philosophical thought known as existentialism. This term had not yet been created at the time of Nietzche’s writing and Heidegger denied the label. The documentary itself is named after a book written by Nietzsche in 1878.Nietzsche was born in 1844 and passed away at the age of 56 in the year 1900. He was a philosopher and Prussian writer whose work had an extreme impact on several 20th century philosophers, scholars and artists. Since his death there has been a lot of creative editing applied to some of his work and because of this Nietzsche has often times been portrayed of as an anti-Semitic misogynist, which is not true.

This documentary showcases the influential work in which he produced during his time. It was daring, bold and challenged its readers. His work questioned the society in which he was surrounded and the rules that people lived by. This significant philosopher is considered to be one of the foreguard of the existential philosophers philosophers.

I love Nietzsche, but I don't think this documentary really goes into how great his writing or ideas are. I was disappointed that it seems like he was just portrayed as the "death of God" guy when his ideas about language and power were so much better than that.

His writing is a lot more powerful than the sort of bombastic quotes chosen in this piece.
