This is a fantastic, action-packed, heart-wrenching documentary. For those of you who have seen the film Rescue Dawn, I definitely recommend this film as well. Little Dieter Needs to Fly tells the disturbing story of Dieter Dengler. For those of you unfamiliar with his story, he is an American immigrant from Germany whose life is one in which many only believe happens in movies.

He piloted a plane in Vietnam that got shot down and he was then taken prisoner by Pathe Lao before being turned over to soldiers of the Army of North Vietnam. Dengler underwent a period of immense torture and starvation while he remained chained to the bottom of a bamboo cage. Finally he was able to escape and lived to tell his horrifying story.

Little Dieter Needs to Fly was made in 1997 and was made for German television. It was written and directed by Werner Herzog. It features a vast amount of footage from a trip in which Herzog and Dengler took back to Thailand and Laos in order to recreate these disturbing events. Locals were hired by Herzon to play the part of Denglers captors while he retraced his disturbing steps. Little Dieter Needs to Fly tells his horrifying story.
