When I came across this short animated song, it was an instant trip down memory lane. For you fellow Canadians watching it you might remember it being played early Saturday mornings on the CBC. It’s amazing how something as short as a three minute animation can bring back years of my sister, brother and I arguing over which cartoon we were going to watch first. Crossing our fingers of course that our bickering wouldn’t wake our father.

The short animated song the Log Driver’s Waltz first aired in 1979, a couple of years before I was born but it doesn’t make it any less special. A French version was also put together. The Canadian folk song was written by Wade Hemsworth and was released by the National Film Board as part of its Canada Vignettes series.

The Log Driver’s Waltz animation features the Mountain City Four/Kate and Anna McGarrigle recording of the song and is one of the most popular films from the NFB.  The song and animation celebrate the lumber industry by showcasing the profession of log driving. As you can see it involved workers walking or running on the logs as they floated down the rivers. The tale is that Hemsworth was inspired to write the song after seeing how the resemblance between this act and dancing. So, take three and enjoy a Canadian classic!

This is awesome and brought back memories even before I started to watch it. I beleive that Rocky & Bullwinkle was on after this…or maybe Bugs Bunny or Woody the Woodpecker. While we’re on the topic of nostagia…remember Camp Cariboo! Love it!
