This unique documentary takes viewers on an extraordinary exploration of the political life and ideas of the controversial Noam Chomsky, linguist, author and radical philosopher. Manufacturing Consent, released in 1988 is an in-depth analysis of both the news and media as a business.

The film uses the propaganda model. Its focus is to send the message that news mass communication media, such as print, television and radio that are corporately owned are subject to commercial competition for the purpose of profit and advertising revenue. They argue this shines through how they report the news, an editorial bias.

Manufacturing Consent presents the theory that if a newspaper goes against the government in a unfavourable fashion it will subtly be excluded access to information. If a newspaper can’t provide information it will in turn lose readers, television will lose viewers, and overall advertisers. To avoid such dangers, news media businesses usually distort their reporting to favour certain governments and corporate policies.

This is an unfortunate truth, as society should ultimately rely on these news media businesses to report the whole truth. Instead we are served a bias opinion filled with propaganda, horrible. There are smaller news media businesses mind you that are not run by large corporations and therefore have a little more freedom as to how and what they report on. Manufacturing Consent is an interesting look inside the media.

This documentary does not belong in the "conspiracy" section. What's with everyone hating on Noam Chomsky- he's brilliant!

I agree this film should not be posted in the "mystery, conspiracy" section. It's about something as old as time, the manufacture of consent also known as propaganda aka lying to people.

So far we all agree that this does not belong in the conspiracy section, it’s a well known fact that these methods are used everyday…
that’s why I wear my tin foil hat and boots, to stop the media getting in my head… and feet. but seriously this should be moved.
