“Mistaken Identity” delves into special cases of Multiple Personality Disorders or MPD.

The release of the film “Sybil”, which was actually based on a book, saw the emergence of many cases of multiple personality disorder diagnosis in the 80′s.

Sybil was a pseudonym for a woman who underwent treatment for the disorder with her doctor Cornelia B. Wilbur. The diagnosis was that Sybil and 16 personalities and the patient went in for treatment of memory loss and social anxiety. Her doctor went through the process of hypnosis to communicate with her other personalities and learn more about them. It went on to describe how Sybil was able to accomplish a lot and even published work under many of her personalities, and concluded with her acknowledging her different personas and integration into a new identity.

With her story, countless of diagnosis were soon cropping up. But as the attention to Sybil and her life has increased, and the interest of the world about MPD patients also magnified, controversy over the actual process of Sybil’s “recovery” has been challenged and questioned.

This documentary digs deep into the actual case of Sybil and examines how her case has been a big controversial case among the experts in the 80′s.

There's absolutely no such thing as Multiple Personality Disorder. It's Dissociative Identity Disorder. If they can't even name a disorder properly, how can I possibly take anything they have to say seriously? Complete rubbish, I won't even watch after 5 minutes in.

    • Haricots

Don't be ridiculous Aster. Nitpicking is not a valid form of criticism.
Besides that, MPD is not "wrong". It's just another term for it.
Check the ICD. They use "Multiple Personality Disorder" and NOT "Dissociative Identity Disorder".

If you are so set on being critical of the documentary then at least find a good reason for it.

If you had watched it, you would have gotten to the part where they question MPD, and talk about how the name's been changed to DID. Way to make a snap judgment.

i do have multiple personality cuz i was molested since child. since im sensitive and talented, i could obtain different personalities. My hormones changes, moods swings so high or so low, evil and good persons come out from me. I have developing trauma, hurts and denial.
i seek God's help to heal different persons in me, and slowly i accepted who I am, leading me to have a healthy and loving mind and heart.
But severe like losing consciousness is dangerous, theres too much deception, Denial and unforgiveness.
i knew that i might have one if i were living in an unhealthy environment.

This is the first time I've felt like commenting on a documentary on this site and I've watched most of them. Firstly, I have to agree with jinnyvonjim's comment. And on that, continue and say that it was one of the poorest documentaries I've watched. It was just about a "cool" thing. Ooooh MPD!!! What wa it;s point? That We shouldn't trust novels for dcientific facts? That the existance of MPD is amiguous? Yea, sure… I dont understand what this 40min long documentary focused on or why it was even created…It was just a flat line of semi-elaborate narrative and completely shallow information. I have no idea why it has a 5/5 rating…

      Sorry for wall-of-text^^

multiple personality is actually a form of time travelling. If you understand what time is – the distance between you getting from where you are to where you want to be – aspects of your personality which can be experienced in a REAL different place in time can show up and handle experences that you can't handle.

Ramtha is a form of multiple personality, all channeling is mulitple personality yet it's appeared controlled and healthy.

In history, your other aspect of you has lived a different life, different name and has experienced the same experience and knows better how to handle and deal with events. When treating other personalities as if they are real and treat them to solve the actual problem instead of simply dealing with it over and over, these aspects can be no longer needed.

Each personality is searching for a cure, searching for a solution but unaware that there is one. They are in a place in time in their NOW and they very much want to get to a place they want to be – they just aren't aware of that yet.

James: yeah, this documentary was weak. I got bored like 20 minutes in, and stopped watching. usually them brits get it right, but not this time.

Both are correct depending on where you are. Also, “Multiple Personality Disorder” used to be used by everyone, but then some changed to using “Dissociative Identity Disorder” because they found it more appropriate. MPD is like the “old term”. So really which term you hear probably depends mostly on the age of the documentary.

If you’re looking for a rational and simple understanding of DID and how it applies to everyone, Nathaniel Branden, surprisingly is the best on this topic. I used to believe in DID/MPD but since reading and experimenting and most importantly thinking about what he writes I now see it is in fact a very dangerous diagnosis. He never says so himself, but it is implicit. His books are in paperback and very cheap. He was Ayn Rand’s lover and a very deep and serious thinker, don’t be fooled by the ‘Self-esteem’ emphasis, this is very serious and thought-provoking work.

Sub-personalities are real, without question, just as is dissociation, but to encourage the splitting is diabolical and leads to a life sentence of insanity. You need only visit some of the online communities for people who are seriously afflicted to understand where I’m coming from.
