Presented by Rebecca Hosking, a wildlife filmmaker, thsi documentary is an exploration into how Hosking can tranform their Devon family farm into something more eco-friendly, or low-energy. What she learns are actually what has been readily available and provided for by nature.

Discovering how much fuel cost has risen in just a year, affecting food production and depleting the earth of its natural resources, Rebecca thought it was time to take action and find supplies that will secure her and her family.

She embarks on this project with her father, who is already close to retirement, and seeks help from other farmers and other growers.

The filmmaker visits small farms which remain rather productive for over two decades, despite the rising cost to maintain this. The farm was like its mini-rain forest where the owners manage animals and vegetables with expertise. What used to be a worn-out land, has been turned into this efficient, sustainable area where cattles are fed the very same food that grows on the farm, and where trees provide not only nourishment, but shade and coolness, as well as nitrogen.

This documentary is such an eye-opener and really helpful to anyone who wants to live a sustainable life.

This was great. It’s is one of those “wake up” documentaries warning us not to take so much for granted.

    • Romeo

      Awesome documentary. Thank you

      Interesting but, full of flaws.

      1) Climate change – see Climate-gate, i.e. falsified data, corrupt politicians, corrupt science…

      2) Fossil Energy…NOT – Russian research, for years, has pointed out that oil comes from deeper in the Earth’s crust than ever thought before. Thus, oil-gas formation is NOT from limited biological sources as previously thought. See also easily recoverable oil versus difficult to recover oil, e.g. oil shale, arctic oil fields, ocean floor drilling.

      3) Preservation – Natural biological/ecological systems continually change. Example: 99+% of all life, plant and animal, that has ever lived on this planet is extinct.
Trying to “preserve” an ecosystem that constantly changes is an invitation to unforeseen disaster. See Yellowstone National Park: forest fire, world wildfires in general, beach sand erosion, etc., etc., etc.

I hope the governments of society starts encouraging the natural production of food as stated in this documentary. I believe our society would be better off if most of us contributed to the direct production of foods. It would be nice if more families could grow thier own food and live closer to nature.

Excellent documentary. I think if the free market is left to work, and the government deregulates and stays out, it would be better than trying to involve the government, but I tend to agree with the main points of the documentary.

      1. “Climate-Gate” when looked at more closely doesn’t do anything to disprove the basic data of Climate Change. A lot of Tabloid screaming about “falsified data” won’t stop glaciers melting. However, the subject has been totally co-opted by governments and financial interests who see it as a tax-raising or money making venture. The failure of our corporate controlled governments to act meaningfully will not stop it affecting you.

      2. The Abiotic argument you’re referring to is irrelevant. None of the decent research claims that oil wells are ‘refilling’, and Thomas Gold’s attempts to prove that petroleum geologists were not drilling in the right places to find such oil failed miserably. The actual origins of oil (fossil or abiotic) are an entirely different debate. Through over a century of hard lessons and trial and error, Petroleum exploration has created a working hypothesis that works. They have learned through experience where to drill and where not to drill. Gold’s attempts to prove this wrong turned up 80 barrels of useless sludge.

      3. There is a major difference between our wanton destruction of our own environment upon which we depend for food and fresh water, and the very gradual changes in nature over millions of years which cause extinctions, or even the sudden events of massive volcanic eruptions and comet impacts. I am of the view that the earth isn’t in danger at all, but it’s ability to preserve life as we know it is being damaged which means extinction for us. The earth will of course recover, but we would not be around to benefit. Preservation in this context means refraining from interfering with natural cycles as much as possible.

the title is humble. in truth, should be called ‘how to save the world’ !

      beautiful film,ty

I hope governments get their greedy little hands out of agriculture. They are the ones messing it up with tax breaks and subsidies for corporations. And not allowing real farmers live off the land.

    • CBat

This docu is the first place I ever heard about Permaculture. It starts off a little slow, but picks up about half way through.

      No-till is the future, WOOT.

    • antonin

eweybody is right, but not absolutely…

    • AngM

Wow.. this was so eye opening to me. But I have been given hope that if we give nature a chance she will provide us with all we need :)
