Pakistani Film ‘Saving Face’ wins Oscar for Documentary
Every year, thousands of women are burned, killed, or permanently disfigured by men who throw acid on their faces and bodies. These men are almost never strangers: they are their husbands, their boyfriends, their co-workers. These are jealous men who never want the woman – who has wronged them – to know happiness again.
The documentary will send a chill down your spine. Thankfully, the documentary won the Oscar for best short documentary and that means that this topic will get more media attention. The buzz that an Oscar win can generate will hopefully result in more funds and minds going into the fight to end this practice. Pakistan has been slow to react to this crisis. Let’s hope that Hollywood can put the kind of pressure that the rest of the world seems reluctant to put on the Pakistani government. While accepting the Oscar, the director said that this was a tribute and a voice for women all over the middle east.
