Pandemic

The swine flu outbreak has doctors, scientists and researchers scrambling for an answer and Dr. Mike Leahy turns to 50 years worth of BBC archives to learn about diseases that may have links to it. The study concentrated on infectious diseases — viruses, bacteria and parasites — in order to understand the nature of the swine flu.
What came out of this research is this documentary on “Pandemic”, where the doctor provides us with a background on the small pox virus, which was considered a real killer disease in the history of mankind. He also walks us through the ways by which this was eradicated, with the help of mass vaccination. Dr. Leahy also touches on the epidemic that is malaria and raises concerns over global politics related to it. Finally, he also explores the origins of AIDS and its effect on the world, which he says may crack the code to finding out what brought on SARS and other types of bird flu.
For every pandemic the doctor delves on, viewers get to know about the environment a lot better. He challenges science, in its battle with nature and pokes viewers with questions about the preservation of life.
