      Phage therapy is not a new medical breakthrough. In fact, in the 1920′s, treatment using this process was done in Soviet Union, despite the fact that it was not approved.

      Phage treatment is used in therapy, when the infection does not respond well to antibiotics. The success rate of phage is actual better than just using antibiotics, according to medical experts, especially when it comes to killing bacteria that is deemed poisonous.

      It is risky to use this treatment, however, because the components of bacteria is said to differ from person to person, requiring phage therapy to be very specific.

      Experts are now looking into this further, however, especially since cases of MRSA has accelerated in recent years. Scientists are finding a new cure. While phage treatment has potentials, we can’t really be too certairn or careful as yet. With the way antibiotics can be mishandled, as it is easily available over the counter, scientists need to explore this further.

      Only time will tell if the experts are able to come up with a viable, controllable treatment. And of course, there’s also the issue with pharmaceutical companies to factor in to all of these.

      Hey alex, you are being terribly unfair to the people in the medicine field.
      Companies compete in giving the doctors the tools they need. If this was easily applicable to diseases that we struggle with with the tools we have today then rest assure that some company will try it. That is what these companies do.

      They can manage research fine even when they are not controlled by governments.

      This is not a miracle cure of all the diseases you can think of, it has many limitations.

      As for FDA moving to make a profit, that is just silly. The FDA is an institution with the goal to protect us consumers, not a profit seeking company.
      You can't just throw out organizations that you associate with evil around and blame them for whatever bad actions that you can think of.

      Oh, and "by the way". The fact that you bring in some unrelated political line, that I assume constitute a big deal of your understanding of politics, really shows your bias.
      It is possible to discuss subjects without ranting on about unrelated and inane political views. Really.

      yes you can say that Im bias , the fda is a way to control what is sold and not sold ,
      so by defolt it will be bias with some products (companies)more than other.

      I must say that yes it should protect the masses for drugs that do not deliver…

      I have nothing agains the medical field or the people but when it is run bay business people then business come first.

      Do I believe that some in the FDA are corrupt? Sure, absolutely. But they are the exception, not the rule.

      FDA looks at the evidence that the company can produce that suggests that the drug or intervention is safe.
      This is by the way a huge reason for the price tag of medicine.
      Just the trials to show efficacy and safety costs the company in the order of $1 billion USD.

      I don't see what you mean about me telling you about what the drugs cost here, are you assuming that I'm for the US myself?
      Well, I'm not.
      I'm from Sweden, a country with heavily subsidized medicine. So it would hardly be a fair comparison to compare the prices I pay with American prices. A lot of the difference is paid by taxes, it's not for free.

      I'm not at all interested in the federal reserve, but the fact that you bring it up suggests that you are interested in conspiracy theories.
      Is that so? If so, then I would suggest that the sources you get your information from are terribly weak in reliability.
      My tip is that you go out and talk with the people in the industry, you will soon realize that the demons you see are mere fantasies.

      I again am both drawn in appaled and then finally given a glimmer of hope in the end…Yes, the FDA is'nt looking out for you as much as it should, even with EU standared starring them in the face but Hell no one dictates america…its abunch of zars ruuning around anyway. But my point is this is yet another almost holistic way of healing that again the fda either ignores or out right slanders.
      I do feel somewhat inspired to become a scientist and make it my thing or just learn how to do that shit myself(pun intended)I just know America needs this.Thanx american dude w/the discovery mag.

      Hi there Alex – I'm not sure if you've been misinformed or your comprehension is misconstrued, but either way, you don't seem to have an understanding of what the Food&Drug Administration is, or what it does, so there's no need to get your panties all up in a wad about it, corrupt or not.

      Not that I'm an expert, but I am an American, and unless you are a U.S. citizen, I don't see why you would give one hoot about what the FDA does. It is a U.S. government regulatory agency designed to protect U.S. Consumers.

      PERIOD.

      Please don't claim to know "tipical america". From the comments you have made on everything from Alan Greenspan, mortgages, and elsewhere on US/Cuban relations, and even Michael Moore and Megavideo, its obvious you dont seem to have a clue as to what Americas typicality is.

      I hope you are able to dispel some of your apparent anger – it really is unfounded.

      As Haricots noted, this doc is over 13yrs old. In the years since then, despite the possibility that it may ultimately prove to be impossible for phage therapy to overcome the regulatory and investment challenges it faces before reaching the market for American patients, it has not hindered scientific studies within the US to make this a standardized and viable alternative to antibiotics.

      There have been some glimmers of hope, however dim. In recent years the FDA has approved the use of phages in a few agricultural/farming applications. The agency also gave approval for the retail sales of a phage spray that kills e-coli on your fruits & vegetables. It had a lot of promotion back when a number of people had died from an e-coli outbreak in the Pacific N.W. I think most noteworthy may be the green light that has been given to an American doctor, with ties to the Institute in (former Soviet) Georgia, to take the first steps in conducting a very limited stage 1 clinical trial for a pharmaceutical application of phage. Trying to be optimistic; at least these are steps in the right direction.

      My niece had (or has) recurrent MRSA. It nearly killed her after entering her bloodstream. She was hospitalized for a month to recover. A recent trip to the doctor confirmed her daughter now has it as well. Its virulent potential scares the pants off me.

      If against all odds a phage therapy for MRSA is made available in the U.S. before the virus is rampantly widespread, it not only will have won on its biological battlefield, it will have won in a race against time.

      It had best not be a "Virus" but instead a Bacteria because Phage do not compat Viruses.

      The FDA is one of the more corrupt parts of the US government I am afraid so do not expect them to do anything "For the benefit of the people" because the only reason they do anything is "For the benefit of their pocket book". That usually involves payouts form many drug companies who want to make sure that only their "Treatments" can be properly labeled and used in our country while making absolutely certain that ANYTHING that cannot be sold as a specific "Drug" no matter its effectiveness never sees the light of day because they cannot patent naturally occuring substances.

      Capitalism at its best, got to love it. If it does not make a lot of $ then it need not apply in this country no matter what "Good" it might do. Also, keep in mind it is rediuclously more profitable to "Treat" symptoms over a lifetime than to "Cure" the disease which causes them.

      OK- I'm sorry – yes, I mistakenly referred to MRSA as a virus. Thank you for pointing that out,although I think thats rather trivial relative to the broader point I was making.

      I assume your comment is referring to my post, seeing as you begin by quoting me. I also notice within quotations you have "for the benefit of the people". Is that to quote me as well? Because I did not use those words (and, if that IS so, apparently you are capable of trivial mistakes too). Besides, thats not what i was saying.

      Please note key words "designed to":(intended), not "it does":(definitive). I dont want you to think I'm some kind of pom-pom girl riding around on the FDA rah-rah wagon. I know its far from infallible. But I was speaking from a neutral position, not implying if I think they do, or do not, perform their intended function well. My point to alex was -he is not a US citizen, therefore, FDA has no authority to control any aspect of his day to day life. So, even if the agency were 100%corrupt, why would he give 2 shits?

      Beyond that, I want to believe that the other points you raise in the body of your comment are, to a degree, over-exaggerated opinion and not a blanket pessimisimz you actually believe to be fact, verbatim.

      I was just going to reply off-the-top-of-my-head. You've been around here awhile. you may know thats pretty much what my comments are. Instead, I thought I would get some first hand input from someone who is very familiar with the FDA. before I spoke. So I called my Uncle Al (Swanson MD) Hes a renowned reconstructive hand surgeon. Before he retired 2yrs ago he was Director of GrandRapids Orthopedic Surgery Centr, Sr Physician of Ortho Research Studies for Rite Pharmaceutical/Medical Technologies, Director of Fellowship/Resident Surgeon Training – Blodgett Hospital, Professor of Surgery – Michigan State Univ. He designed some 20 different joints & implants for fingers, hands, wrists, &toes. He assured me that never once was there an underhanded payout to get FDA approval for his devices. Al's a wee bit anal – not one for mistakes. I'm quite confident that he wouldnt tell me something if he did not know it to be true. Agency changes (during the Bush admin. -like thats a surprise, ya know?) have created opportunities where conflict of interests potentially could lead to corruption. It may exists, but by no means is prevalent. And he explained why its difficult to get phages on the market (and it has nothing to do with corruption, or greed, or any ill-intent on the part of the pharm co's or the FDA). *Hint: they are specific, not broad spectrum & have dynamic capabilities.

      (now Al & Auntie are expecting me to go help them with some spring cleaning around their house next week – "since I called", he said)

      If you want to be more specific about evidence of corruption that you are aware of, and care to disclose your sources for that information, perhaps we could discuss this further.

      I wonder to what extension, the fact of not applying a biological “thing” to the pharmacological field is related to…economics.

      Do you realize how much money is made from antibiothics?
      And a biological entity CANNOT be patented!
