The 2012 Oscars are fast approaching and I have been doing a series on all of the nominees for – you guessed it – best feature length documentary. So far, I have covered From Hell and Back Again, If a Tree Falls, and Undefeated.

Today, I look at PINA: the legendary German choreographer Pina Bausch, to be exact.

Right off the bat I should tell you that I am not an avid dance watcher. I enjoy a breathtaking ballet or Opera but I am not a loyal watcher of “So You Think You Can Dance.” Imagine my surprise to discover how much I enjoyed this documentary.

Pina is one of the few dance legends of our age. She had a very modern, aggressive style that challenged the conceptions of dance and mixed emotion into technique on a scale that was never before seen. She died in 2009, but her influence lives on and this documentary tribute is a living testament to what she brought to the world.
