Plan of Action: How the Spinal Cord Controls Movement
This documentary presents a talk from Thomas M. Jessell, who is a professor at the Columbia University and is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator.
Here, he talks about the neural circuits, which essentially controls how we can move our body. He discussing the way our brain is wired into this, which dictates some control over our activities, such as moving our limbs or legs.
The doctor shows examples like Lou Gehrig’s impressive coordination of the hand and eye, or the clarity and purity of the musci some of the world’s most celebrated musicians deliver. He also shows that, while these examples show how fascinating the human body works, its fragility is also just as crucial. As we all know, Lou Gehrig developed a disease and died due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and du Pré to multiple sclerosis.
The doctor says that all of these are traced back to the neural circuits, that signals the brain so that our motor faculties can move.
