Ross Kemp, the British TV personality, goes to the key areas of the Amazon in Brazil and Ecuador, and filmed the different agricultural practices of the locals like soya bean farming and cattle farming. He also explores the lush forest to talk about deforestation that is happening in this part of the world.

The actor, author and journalist notes the different pressures faced by Brazil and Ecuador in both the socio-economic and environmental development of these regions.

He says that this documentary will show first-hand how man’s greed can be to the destruction of the environment. He already saw the same scenario while filming another documentary in Nigeria the previous years, and it’s the same thing for the Amazon.

Kemp says that he is not an environmentalist, but the damages we have done to the earth is causing such a devastation, it’s even interfering with the world’s temperature and climate.

Will the rainforest persist inspite of our depletion of its resources? Kemp hopes that his exploration will convince us to change our ways and help sustain the earth.

This documentary is presented in two parts.

      part 2??

    • (just a) FROG on the LOG

When it comes to the greed of executives of any particular corporation or industry that is earning berzillions of dollars annually, I always wonder; did those people have that vile characteristic about them (or the makings for it) since they were children? Or did something happen to them along the way that turned them into gluttons without a conscience? I don’t understand how they can live with themselves.

Very, very good documentary. I hope Part 2 (found on the next page) will be equally as good.

They show us documentaries like these which inform us, but on what cost?

People have to be proactive. This is helpful but not enough to save the forest.

We look at the grassroots, the people directly affecting the forest, but have we looked at the power holders? The ones who call the shots?

What’s their actions against deforestation? You can’t stop people from clearing the forest when you don’t give them alternatives to ease their hunger. And the help comes from those in developed countries. The Amazon simply is the solution to the problems they create.

This is a far greater problem with far greater implications. In fact one could probably right a book about it.

You’re right when you say “People have to be proactive.” but that’s far easier said than done.

If someone is willing to pay 2500(plus) dollars for a night table that came from a 30 meter tree log that costs 500 dollars you can see that they will definetly keep chopping down trees. And that’s only one aspect of this problem.

In my first paragraph instead of “right” it should be “write”. Damn I’m tired ^^

Blaming the consumer is classic passing the buck and trying to convince everyone on the planet not to buy a certain item to affect change is like trying to get the cart to push the donkey.
The entire purpose of government is to regulate and ensure a countries resources are used purposefully whether that be natural resources, the workforce, water and power management. Whether the country be dictatorial, democratic or whatever, if they choose to use any of their resources for their own monetary gain whether by taxing companies that make huge profits or by accepting political donations by said companies, there is very little any of the subjects of that nation can do about it, let alone subjects from other nations.
For the government of another country to put pressure on a government that is misusing its resources creates a minefeild of what-ifs, but it certainly is effective for several governments to put pressure on one government and affect change, isnt that the role of the UN?

    • Tiago C.

The consumer IS specifically the one to blaim in this case. But that’s still only one aspect of this problem. If there are no buyers there will be no sellers!
And this is all intertwined with our economics and social structures and personal interests.

People don’t just want food on their tables and a roof over their heads. Heck they want Ferraris (not one, but several. If you only want one, what that tells me is that you dont have one yet)
They want to have more than their neighbours, their employees, their friends and even their sieblings.
And they want a house, but they want it to have 10 rooms, a huge courtyard and a swimming pool. They also want it made from the best materials. And the grass can’t grow naturally, they want the grass that has grown on the other side of the world (where “they say” its greener).
      Are you getting my drift?
Why buy Prada shoes for 5000 dollars and not shoes from the shoe shop down the street for 50?
      Status quo, ostentation.

You can say you dont want any of these things but the fact is that we always want more and better than what we have (and that others have). And if you say you would never buy such things then it’s because you can’t. Just look at the people that can.
And these people are setting the patterns higher for other people.

One of the problems we face here is bad distribution of wealth.
Some have so much that they can spend 2500 dollars on a night stand that they’ll probably replace later on if they feel like it. And others, that are struggling to live by, have to sell the materials to make 100 night stands at a tenth of the price of 1. People that also have their own dreams of getting as much or better than the next person.

Other aspect of this situation is that, every day the world population rises in number and whether we like the fact or not, each one of us has to use resources just to even be alive. Resources that are NOT unlimited.
The world’s real money isn’t paper and coin, those are just representative, most of the world’s “money” are it’s resources.

People consuming everyday allows on one hand, the big guys to fill their pockets allowing them to perpetuate the aforementioned extravaganzas while on the other hand each of us is also consuming their own share of resources.
And of course, these resources have to come from somewhere.

If I don’t have something that I WANT I will try to buy it from someone that has it, and If the person I’m buying from NEEDS something I have, they WILL sell it!

Now the problem here is how do we convince someone to part from their night stand, or their Ferrari? How do we convince them to change their Prada shoes by unbranded shoes. Or how do we convince someone to not sell something they have for something else they want more?
      We can’t.
I know I wouldn’t want to open hand of some of the things that make up my lifestyle. Like I said, we all strive to get better, if we are faced with the possibility of getting worse we won’t accept it easily (if at all). Especially if we’re the ones unable to get “x” resources and someone else is still getting more than us.
Also, why would I pass on the chance of getting more food for my meal than the others if I had the chance?

From where I see it, this is a neverending cycle that is maybe already too rooted in our structure to be controled.
If ever, people will probably only take action about this when there’s no other choice for them.
Let’s just hope we can restructuralize to a better method for everyone before it’s too late.
