The Islams relate the study of science in their understanding of God and considers nature as an important part of a divinity’s being. It is outlined in the Tawhid, which is one of the teachings in Islam.

This documentary pursues through the correlation between Science and the Islam religion to understand whether there is a conflict. Presenter Jim Al-Khalilim, who is also a theoretical phycisist, visits the countries of Syria, Tunisia, Iran and Spain to explore the topic and goes back to the periods between the 8th to the 14th century to uncover this.

Islam’s contribution to the world isn’t just in matters of religion. But these are concepts that we still make use of today, with modern science — algebra, chemistry and physics, are just a few. Some of the medieval period’s greatest scientists were Islam.

This documentary also serves some sort of a journey for the presenter, as he also uncovers a culture that’s diverse and fascinating, one that is a reflection of his origins or beginnings.

I agree with you here and my comment was aimed at those Muslims (and there’s many I’m afraid) who still see everything from a religious angle. An example of this can be seen by just debating with Muslims. They seem to think the West are devoted Christians because they are devoted Muslims and they don’t seem to be aware how Atheism is dominant in Western Europe these days. They don’t seem to be able to understand that many of us here have no time for fairytales whether it be Islam, Christianity, Judaism etc.

Wow.. I’m not even Muslim but that shocks me that you say Islamic nations aren’t tolerant yet what comes up is exactly that..
The Qu’ran actually contains many stories and prophets common to Christianity (and Judaism for that matter) such as Genesis, Abraham, etcetera up to recognizing Jesus as a prophet. The Qu’ran just specifies Mohammed as the LAST of the prophets among other alterations.
Also, the greatest Islamic empires of the middle ages up to the First World War permitted other monotheistic religions (“people of the book”, ie Christians and Jews) to practice their own religions, especially in Moorish Spain and the Ottoman Empire. Today, nations such as Lebanon have more than 1/3 of the poplulation as Christians with relatively little turmoil (at least today) within Lebanese society.
Not all muslims want to kill jews, in fact most don’t want to at all. What is behind that misconception is that the Jewish Homeland (today’s Israel) was created from a predominantly Muslim/Arabic region called Palestine in which Christians, Jews, and Muslims had shared for quite a while and all held as a holy place. Being against Israel simply is for the reason that they are opposed to the mass moving of Jewish settlers from around the world, forcing Palestinians from their homes into smaller and smaller areas of land, (especially Gaza).
Also don’t forget that if we lived by the rules of the bible verbatim, couples that had sex before marriage would be arrested.. homosexuality punished by death, rape victims punished, amongst many other shocking things you wouldn’t expect out of supposedly “tolerant” religion.

Well, you couldn’t have read too much Mr1000, because I don’t have too much to say about religion other than its a matter of ones personal opinion and I DO respect an individuals right to that opinion. Of the 2 or 3 occasions that I have replied on the topic, I believe they were no more than (admittedly) lame one line quips. If you know of a particular instance where I criticized, belittled, or judged, someone here for their spiritual convictions, please draw my attention to it so I may appropriately apologize to them. My previous reply was intended, in a round about way, to tell the site admin that not everyone here takes objection to those who wish to incorporate their ideology in their postings, as some citing religious quotations had recently been deleted.

As for my pathetic life, I guess that would be a matter of opinion as well, and one of which I couldn’t disagree with you more. I have a 13yr career in the field of Non-Destructive Testing where I hold several level II certifications. The work I do is conducted in environments of extreme conditions, and crucial to the safety of others. My job has taken me to 32 different states, Canada & Mexico from a day to a month at a time. This has afforded me the ability to see and experience some of the greatest things to be found in N America (and ample time to watch documentaries in my hotel room) I also volunteer for an animal rescue organization, a wildlife rehabilitation center, and a veterans retirement home. I ski, I skate, I surf. and for a rush I like to jump waves at 72mph in my little 22ft Donzi offshore go-fast, as there is no thrill like those moments of weightless hang-time when the entire boat is airborn between the swells. (by default I’m a so/so mechanic on a 350Chevy/Alpha1 OD).

And yes, I like documentaries. I turned my TV off 15 months ago in favor of online entertainment that may inform, enlighten, or educate me in some small way, and of 3 sites I visit here most often (and only comment here – lucky you!) Iknow of no other site that draws in visitors from so mny different countries that may speak on such a broaqd array of topics. I like (in a “cyber” sense) everyone who posts comments here, no matter what it is they have to say. I appreciate the opportunity to consider what the world looks like to those whose vantage point is different from my own. And when I have something to say I’ll toss two cents in as well (for all its worth). If that deems me pathetic, so be it. If my comments in general are what have you so seemingly bent then perhaps it would be best if you just skip over reading my words altogether.

But I must say; you do have some nerve, dear sir, to asses my life by my frequenting of this site when it appears that you yourself are quite a prolific poster of somewhat arrogant comments on a number of other sites, all of similar subject matter. My favorite being:

I have to say I’ve seen alot of this type of thing on the net, but despite the vitriol and wide-eyed intensity of people like this, I consider them alot like those who shout obsenities at motorists from the safety and isolation of their own car. When Blacks were trying to be accepted in society there were people, including Police and Politicians, who would do violence upon them in full sight of anyone who might be watching. These people know that there is not enough societal support to do anything but go on hateful rants on the anonymous Internet. Time marches on and soon Muslims will be a part of society as Blacks are now becoming. Thet fought against the Blacks too, this is just the sound of fear and hate when it whimpers. That is absolutely not true. Most of the Prophet’s quotes (“hadeeth”), if not traceable to more than one person who cites them almost exactly the same way, are immediately descredited.

It would be wise to consider the fact that Muslims pay the most attention to preserving the text. It’s why there is only one version of the Qur’an, for example, and that all versions are aligned to older, thousand year-old copies as references. There are no “different ways” of writing the Qur’an or hadeeth, since truly, they are the compass which Muslims are advised to follow.

It’s why there’s a huge misconception that Muslims seek a leader to follow-which is why countries like Iraq and Afghanistan are treaded upon like old newspapers under the guise of dismantling men like Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

“?????? ? ?????” which literally translates to “The Book (Qur’an) and The Sunnah (cited, verified quotes and actions of The Prophet) are what Muslims are advised to follow. This is stressed on so much, to the point that unless a Muslim can verify the text, understand it, then find reason in it, he would seek more sources to verify it.

Perhaps this is why Islam is difficult for some people to digest. The concept of no middle man is troubling for some.
