Its not so much about religion Dave, but more about Civilization. There were a lot of scientists both in the Western and Islamic world who were atheists for example… but still their achievements are attributed to the civilization from which they came form. I am not defending just Islam here, but also contributions of Islamic world to the early steps of science that are usually ignored by the West.
I agree with you here and my comment was aimed at those Muslims (and there’s many I’m afraid) who still see everything from a religious angle. An example of this can be seen by just debating with Muslims. They seem to think the West are devoted Christians because they are devoted Muslims and they don’t seem to be aware how Atheism is dominant in Western Europe these days. Wow.. I’m not even Muslim but that shocks me that you say Islamic nations aren’t tolerant yet what comes up is exactly that..
The Qu’ran actually contains many stories and prophets common to Christianity (and Judaism for that matter) such as Genesis, Abraham, etcetera up to recognizing Jesus as a prophet. The Qu’ran just specifies Mohammed as the LAST of the prophets among other alterations.
Also, the greatest Islamic empires of the middle ages up to the First World War permitted other monotheistic religions (“people of the book”, ie Christians and Jews) to practice their own religions, especially in Moorish Spain and the Ottoman Empire. Today, nations such as Lebanon have more than 1/3 of the poplulation as Christians with relatively little turmoil (at least today) within Lebanese society.
Not all muslims want to kill jews, in fact most don’t want to at all. What is behind that misconception is that the Jewish Homeland (today’s Israel) was created from a predominantly Muslim/Arabic region called Palestine in which Christians, Jews, and Muslims had shared for quite a while and all held as a holy place. Being against Israel simply is for the reason that they are opposed to the mass moving of Jewish settlers from around the world, forcing Palestinians from their homes into smaller and smaller areas of land, (especially Gaza).
Also don’t forget that if we lived by the rules of the bible verbatim, couples that had sex before marriage would be arrested.. homosexuality punished by death, rape victims punished, amongst many other shocking things you wouldn’t expect out of supposedly “tolerant” religion.

I do not think any of you actually understood what the author was trying to say, listen to the last five minutes of this documentary again, he said science does not derive from any religion or culture, it transcends both and is the heritage of all. There is no room here for a discussion on the benefits nor the destructive nature of a religion or culture, or a celebration of who discovered what first; that is irrelevant; the only thing celebrated here is the transcendent nature of knowledge and its ability to bring people together REGARDLESS of demographic.

I have to say I’ve seen alot of this type of thing on the net, but despite the vitriol and wide-eyed intensity of people like this, I consider them alot like those who shout obsenities at motorists from the safety and isolation of their own car. When Blacks were trying to be accepted in society there were people, including Police and Politicians, who would do violence upon them in full sight of anyone who might be watching. These people know that there is not enough societal support to do anything but go on hateful rants on the anonymous Internet.
