Cannabis, it’s a controversial topic and what that is debated frequently. Legalize it or not? Is it better or worse than alcohol? As years have gone on, has this drug increasingly become more potent? Is cannabis, marijuana, weed, dope, whatever you would like to call it, really capable of making you go mad? Can smoking a joint really lead to more serious and harmful drugs? Is dope a gateway drug? The questions surrounding this drug go on and on and the answers typically vary depending on where you stand on the issue.

In this documentary, Should I Smoke Dope? Nicky Taylor, a journalist takes viewers on a “dope” adventure as she travels to Amsterdam in hopes of answering many of the above mentioned questioned. Her overall purpose, to explore the growing debate about the legal classification of cannabis.

While on her voyage, Nicky helps out in an Amsterdam coffee shop the sells the drug. She uncovers first hand what the effects of cannabis can be on everyday life and the results might surprise you. Meanwhile, back in the UN Nicky dissevers a genetically modified cannabis skunk. She also participates in a month-long medical trial to answer the question Should I Smoke Dope?

as soon as i heard white widow, i took a trip down memory lane myself. Ah yes befor i ever had responsability i had smoke. Good documentary. Some points are a bit much(going insane from weed?!?, you were probably insane befor you started smoking and that brought it out! lol

this stands out as 1 of those 1st class bbc gov/propaganda documentaries. they couldnt put the bit with the doc studing the lad who shot his lungs to hell smoking "pure cannabis" next to the part with the "police expert" saying theres an alarming amount of weed comming in coated in glass balls as that would just add weight to the legislation agenda. if the uk gov just gave out a licence to grow upto say 4 plants that you would renew every year like a tv licence, then people could grow there own to there own tastes without fear of arrest, being ripped off or worse your health being destroyed. criminal profits wouldnt exsist and more money to the treasury…..but the downside is alot of pharmaceutical companies would go under if we didn't need there synthetics….what a pitty that woudnt be

    • S. Stahl

I have mixed feelings about this documentary. On the positive, they do show how prohibition does not work, and a glance inside the Dutch Model offers us a tangible solution to our over-crowded prison system and non-sensible and irrational policies regarding cannabis use.

In short, this documentary is completely ignorant to the "tolerance" issue. So, basically If you're a blonde in your late 30's to early 40's who hasnt smoked cannabis since college, you might not want to start out with a joint the size of a finger.

Also, claims that cannabis causes schitzophrenia have been debunked. In Canada, cannabis use has been on the rise for quite some time, while schitzophrenia rates remain constant.

Cannabis prohibition started as a mis-information campaign, motivated primarily by rascist reasons, which can be attributed to greed, etc, etc. It is going to take a RE-education campaign to make it legal again.

this documentary is bs. but worth watching for seeing the chick stoned :P

    • allisson

I remember the first 10 times i got high. I got motion sickness, and puked really bad. Infact the taste alone made me sick. Took me 4 years to try it again. THen it was ok. I dont get it.

    • allisson

S.Stahl- i respect and applaud your opinion. I totally agree. Facts are facts, and canada has shown us a light. As always. This documentary was fun to watch, but it clearly is biased! and yeah, a 30 year old woman going to amsterdam to smoke isnt the smartest idea, especialy when she is not a smoker and acts extremely childish while high. I hate people like that. You dont have to act that way, and you can maintain yourself high. THe driving test pissed me off too. Alchahol is the worst thing to drive on. THe statistics are true on drunk drivers.

    • Falcon Heene

Yo, Stahl, show me some evidence — a published science report, whatever — that debunks the claim that cannabis causes schizophrenia.

You can't just say these things when you're criticizing something if you can't back them up. It lowers the level of discourse for everyone.

I am a smoker myself, but I'm not going to jump on the willfully naive stoner bandwagon and say that smoking weed is always all roses. The fact is, this drug is mind-altering. And while we might all want it more accessible for our own sakes, we ought not to spread misinformation about weed in the way of it (ie, that it's harmless or whatever). Many people have to stop smoking because of what it does to them.

It's not the perfect drug. But it's also not worth it for it to be illegal.

    • Jack Kebek

I could never disagree with such a wise comment.
      Bravo!

    • spacebunny

The truth about cannabis is…it smells like animal dung. You want to relax? Go watch a movie. Take your stinkweed somewhere else.

    • Jack Kebek

You say "this drug is mind-altering".
      Hummm…
The smell of "warm bread" is mind altering, a glass of hot milk is mind altering, cafeine and nicotine are also mind altering "substances", and I can go on…
Many of the neurotransmitters made by our own bodies (endorphine, adrenaline, dopamine, etc.ine…) are mind altering.

Doing anything you like is mind altering through complex electro-neuro-chemistry activity.
The fact is our brain constantly modifies our "mood", but we just don't realize it.

If you can't realize your mind gets out of (your) control, be it due to drugs, depression, or whatever else, even posting comments, then, you're deep in it and should begin reconsidering…

Ummm.. sorry, all of this ain't directed at you Falcon Heene, it's just "general talk" for those who can't suffer their minds being altered ;-) Would you believe chronic pain is mind altering?

In short, it's not because something alters our mind that makes it good or bad. Personally, I believe the most dangerous side effect of smoking cannabis is… smoking it! Not it's effect, unless of course, one gets adverse effects. If so, don't touch it!

Of course, moderation should apply. Even if water is good for you, one can drown in it eh.

    • Orpi

The point for me isnt if dope is good or bad for you, its rather if it should be legal or not.

The drug is mind altering, but so is alcohol and nicotine, alcohol more than nicotine. Yet alcohol and nicotine are not considered illegal. Both substances are as toxic (alcohol to your liver, nicotine to your lungs through smoke and brain by locking on to receptors and ultimately destroying them) as pot.

I do not smoke dope, but im a heavy smoker, the only reason i dont use is in fact i discovered im succeptible to be addicted really quick. So for now id like to stick with nicotine, its still the least mindfucking one.

On a sidenote, the statement that nowhere in the world cannabis is illegal, is just not true.
Argentina just recently made it legal to posess small amounts for private consumption:

      http://www.rollitup.org/marijuana-news-around-globe/67918-argentina-decriminalizes-cannabis.html

also an extensive list with countries and their status on cannabis:

as for the debunking of the cannabis induced psychosis, medical uk government study (does qualify as proof yes?):

if you dont want to go into the article itself, heres an article based on it with citacions:

      http://blog.norml.org/2009/07/01/study-debunks-claims-that-pot-smoking-causes-mental-illness/

and yes i just googled that Falcon Heene, so its just lazieness on your side for being uninformed.

      live long…AND SUCK IT!

"On a sidenote, the statement that nowhere in the world cannabis is illegal, is just not true."

i ofc meant legal there instead of illegal :P

      Orpi mon ami.

      Source :
      http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00039501.htm#00001345.htm
"Each year in the United States, approximately 400,000 deaths result from cigarette smoking, 100,000 from misuse of alcohol, and 20,000 from use of illicit drugs
(Bias? "Misuse of alcohol" versus "use of drug." Why not misuse of drugs)
Among persons who had used any of the four substances (Cigarettes, Alcohol, Cocaine, Marijuana) every day for greater than or equal to 2 consecutive weeks, those who smoked cigarettes (90.9%) and those who used cocaine (78.9%) were more likely to report a symptom of addiction than were persons who used alcohol (48.1%) or marijuana (58.8%)."

      ————–

From a marketing point of view, why do most cigarette makes have that brownish tip?
Because it looks like a "nipple" and it is supposed to "comfort you" in some way. Horrific eh.

When I quit smoking, it wasn't to not stink, it wasn't either to save money nor was it to be healthier. Mainly, it was to be "free" : free to use both of my hands whenever, and free to stop thinking about cigarettes so many time a day — and I smoked no more than half a pack a day.

Never encourage anyone to smoke… anything. Respect freedom. Make it legal! And Educate!!!
Addiction is a deep rooted complex illness, not a crime!

Thx for your links, I'm going there now :)

P.S. Addiction isn't only about substances, or else, no one could get "very highly addicted" to gambling.

      Live long and FREE!

    • http://philosophyislaughter.wordpress.com Jack Mackenna

I don't think cannabis causes schizophrenia. i think schizophrenics are drawn to it as self-medication.

but, this is only personal experience, i am not a scientist.

    • Orpi

      @Jack Kebek

i smoke Pall Mall Orange (super-lights) which have a white tip :P

    • Jack Kebek

      Bonjour Orpi

Any claim of light or (super-lights) is a "false claim". That kind of appellation (Marketing scam) is now illegal in some countries since the side effects and risks are the same as "regulars". It's an unregulated appellation, and so, it means absolutely nothing. It's no more than a pink coating on a pack of… crap.

You're just smoking more lies :P

    • Jack Kebek

You're right on "other Jack". Some doctors and researchers come to the same conclusion.

Here's an account I know of which seems to fit quite a few "smokers".
"The first time I got high, it was like finally coming back home from a long far away voyage. I had never felt this comfortable in my mind (or at peace with myself say others)."

This is an indication that there might be some underlying psychological condition in some of those persons. One should be wise enough to at least self-investigate why they feel that way about it.

Our brains are more complex than our own Universe, no generalization can apply depending on own experiences… or beliefs.

If to one, it smells like animal dung, trust your instinct and stay clear. It's a good indication that the "stuff" ain't probably suited for you to begin with.

Have a nice documentary-log day ya all :)

    • S. Stahl

Hey Falcon, Here is one of many links that come up when you type "does cannabis cause schizophrenia" into google. Maybe my google is different from yours…. Anyways, here's the facts you were too lazy to look up yourself.

      http://www.whyprohibition.ca/blogs/jacob-hunter/doubt-cast-cannabis-schizophrenia-link

"A new study in the UK has cast doubt on the supposed link between cannabis use and schizophrenia.

But at least one Australian researcher says the study needs more evidence.

Previous research has suggested cannabis use increases the risk of being diagnosed with either psychosis or schizophrenia.

This latest study, led by Dr Martin Frisher of Keele University, examined the records of 600,000 patients aged between 16 and 44, but failed to find a similar link."

"They argue if cannabis use does cause schizophrenia, then an increase in cannabis use should be followed by an increase in the incidence of schizophrenia.

According to the study, cannabis use in the UK between 1972 and 2002 has increased four-fold in the general population, and 18-fold among under-18s.

Based on the literature supporting the link, the authors argue that this should be followed by an increase in schizophrenia incidence of 29% between 1990 and 2010.

But the researchers found no increase in the rates of schizophrenia and psychosis diagnosis during that period. In fact some of the data suggested the incidence of these conditions had decreased."

    • Mercury

It was so funny to see her laughing loool.

When I was a teenager I would sometimes try Cannabis or Ash, and I would always feel depressed, sleepy and negative.
In my early 20's I tried it again and it was great, relaxing, made me laugh, it was like taking a brake of the world. On both times I was more lucid compared to being drunk, the only difference about the first and second time was my opinion of Cannabis. I think this is a very important factor. When younger, I believed in all the myths people created around Cannabis, as I got older my opinion changed.
In conclusion, as a person that does not consume any type of drug for some years now, not even nicotine or caffeine or alcohol, if I had to choose from all the drugs I know I would choose Cannabis.

    • Orpi

      @Jack Kebek, mon freré

doesnt negate the fact that they have white tips, as do my LD Menthols :P

Im quite aware of the bullshit of lights, super-lights, menthols etc (i did study pharmacy you know).

I dont smoke them because i think its healthier, i smoke them because they taste better than other brands (to me).

I will emphasize again, i am aware of all the dangers of smoking, i dont need a lecture on it. I know all cancerogenic compounds of fags by heart, as i do with coffee.

I have inquired about my feelings towards cigarettes and/or other addictions i have (coffee, computers..etc). And i for one freely admit that i do have them.
I can not immagine functioning without my cup of joe in the morning, a fag and a good read of huffington post.

However, my addictions are mild, and in most cases socially acceptable. So in that case i do not feel the need to drop them as they do not impair my functioning in society.

Also i doubt reading huffington post will kill me anytime soon. ;)

    • Jack Kebek

      Bonjour Orpi mon frère

You're a wise man… All I can wish is that one day, you find cigarettes so disgusting, you'll have become an ex-smoker.

It's also a perceptual issue you know. Before I kicked the habit, I trained myself to despise them for quite a few months. I't made stopping quite easier for me.

With some imagination, this trick can help to get rid of any habit one wishes to free him(her)self from.

Oh, I read something about menthols being even more addictive, but I guess you already know ;^)

It's time to for me brew that 1st coffee
      Mmmmmm…

      Take care bro

put simply all we are is a bag of chemicals and everything you put in your body (even food) has a chemical reaction,in foods case it gets turned into energys. but when it comes to spiritual and enlightening substances the ned flanders of the world hate it, try to control it and just generally try to bring you down to their level…..cant say i blame them really, i too hate it when someones higher than me.

    • AdamTM

"….i too hate it when someones HIGHER than me."

      ba-badum-ching!

    • allisson

@ falcon heene. Its already legalized in many states. FOr multiple purposes. ANd so far so good. What it does to people is short term. Its mental, not physically addicting. Its safer then alchahol. And how many reports are there on people either getting high and then killing someone while driving? How many people go out and cause disturbances or commit crimes that arent drug related, but the person was on weed?
If weed is soooo bad why is it used for medical purposes? in quite a few places. FOr the treatment and management of pain, nausea, severe anxiety…list goes on, aids, cancer, degenerative disk disease. now compare the side effects of maryjuanna to those of the many pills you would instead be taking. Narcotic painkillers-deadly.addicting. Benzodiazapines-addicting, and deadly. If you want proof of anything, go look it up yourself. Im not saying being a weed smoker is a good thing. With all medications there is downsides. But compare the downsides and risks for what weed is replacing and for what purpose.

    • CBat

I stopped watching as soon as she smoked it like a cigg.

    • Fokke

Jesus, what bullshit is this. The chick is the worst faker Ive ever seen. Actin like she cant drive faster than 25 miles an hour or is suddenly not able to build something anymore. The worse part was when she did 2 hits on a strong hash and started actin like she was in another world. And that all from joints that cointained only 1/10 of a gramm.

    • Compliant with CA PROP 215 & SB 420

FACT: Marijuana contains TERPENES, which are naturally-occurring fragrant compounds found in ALL sweet-smelling fruits, flowers, berries and veggies. Any TRUE cannabis connoisseur can offer you a vast array of fragrant cannabis flowers that contain the EXACT same terpenes found in blueberries, citrus and conifers, making the marijuana hold the EXACT SAME smell….LITERALLY! Well, I am very sorry about the so-called "stinkweed" you smelled…in my 15 years of smoking indoor hydroponics from the heart of California, I have never come across anything that even remotely resembled the scent of "animal dung". I would think back to WHOM it was who had the "weed" and/or where they got it from!!!

    • submarinesoup

hahaha wow biased media at its best. she's demonizing the drug by acting like an idiot on it, and it's depressing. Like she really wouldn't be able to drive the speed limit/would act like such a fool if she wasn't trying to. I hope she didn't get any grants for this moronic "research."

    • viewer

if you don't like cannab1s cannab1s wont like you

    • viewer

7:30 that is much more than 1/10 of a gram, shes definitely distorting peoples perception of mariuana: that joint was proably about 2-4 g's. its all about how much you want to feel the effects and how, she expected to feel bad therefore she felt bad.

    • Liberator

what did she expect? would she be able to concentrate while drunk?

    • pete

I think they might be referring "skunk" , Some weed has a distinct smell of skunk, surely in your 15 yrs of weed smoking you have encountered it.

I smoke marijuana on a daily basis and I am on national leadership role in college. (I have 3.5+ GPA) Cannabis isn't for everyone. I wouldn’t expect everyone to be able to live active, productive lifestyles and smoke marijuana. The truth is, some of us can. I don't have an addictive personality, I don't smoke tobacco or drink alcohol or do other drugs. If you saw me on the street you would never know I smoke weed.

The doctor at the beginning of the film states that there are all types of horrible side effects on can experience. Cannabis certainly has varying effects on different people and I think most people who smoke it on a regular basis would agree that it won’t lead to schizophrenia. I think that’s just going a little over-board.

There are too many healthy successful people (Michael Phelps for example) that smoke marijuana and it doesn’t ruin their lives or destroy their minds. If anything, the illegality of cannabis seems to contribute to more societal problems than effects of the drug itself.

    • DK McGreeb

Indeed, Stacie, weed is given the worst mask of all. There is a great quote from a man, you will have to forgive me as I can't remember who it was as it was in a doc a while back, and that quote was:
"The most dangerous thing about cannabis is the fact that you can get arrested and given a criminal record for it".
No wiser words have ever been spoken.

This is video is such propaganda. She smoked 1/10 of a gram! The sad part is that people don't realize how minute that amount is, yet she acts like she is whacked out of her mind. This video gives a very distorted picture to the public on the so called "dangers" of use

    • spliffsmoker

Propaganda in its truest form. you can even see the owner of the cannibis college is like who the fuck is this retarded chick?

    • Carol

      Legalize it!!!

I live in Holland and its sort of legal here. Scientific reasearch shows time and again that countries that have very restrictive policies, have more people wo are addicted to drugs. So the argument that weed leeds to heaier drug is just not true.

I peronaly know an Oxford proffesor who smokes weed.
Alchohol i legal, but it kills more people then weed ever does.

I smoked a lot in my twenty's (33 now). I have a mastersdegree and a good job and dont even smoke. It's surly not for everybody. But let people make their own decisions.

    • Satan

what a noob. smoke moar before you try experiments. i mean you didn't try to build a cabinet after your first 4 shots of vodka in years.

    • Aaron

i totally agree that was a huge spliff with only 1/10 of a gram? it had to have been at least 2 or 3 grams of tobacco in that this video is such crap it makes me sick

    • Johnny Sykes

No drug, not even marijuana causes the fundamental ills of society. If we are looking for the source of our troubles we shouldnt test for drugs we should test for stupidity, ignorance, greed, and love of power,

    • Johnny Sykes

I am free, no matter what rules surround me. if I find them tolerable, I will tolerate them; if I find them obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am moraly responsible for everything that I do.

    • G

I haven't even watched this, yet it sounds like a modern day Reefer Madness from reading the comments. 0.1g of typical market-quality marijuana is a significant amount for a very inexperienced smoker, but a rather small amount for typical smokers.

Heavy smokers, on the other hand, have no problem smoking an eighth to a quarter ounce a day (3.5g-7.0g). When I was smoking, a quarter ounce would be about right most the time. However, it should be noted the high is not near the same as the high experienced by someone who hasn't smoked in days. I could drive or operate machinery no problem. The only exception would be after first smoking after a period of abstinence for a few days, where I'd wait a couple of hours.

THC is an interesting drug, though, which affects people slightly differently, and in a few cases, quite differently. These are especially true of the withdrawal symptoms, which, while tame compared to that of heroin and not life-threatening like withdrawing from alcohol, are, I assure you from personal experience, very, very real indeed. Hundreds of examples:

      http://addiction-dirkh.blogspot.com/2007/10/marijuana-withdrawal.html

    • The Tay

really? you are worried about the logistics? the obsession is over how much of a noob, or how much 'that chick be toking'? look, i don't smoke weed anymore. i work in the military. i have however during my university days smoked my share and yours. and weed is no different, morally than alchohol other than one thing, its illegal. i agree it shouldn't be, but its been made so much into a lifestyle that its become glamored. what would it be like it alcoholism where as idolized as pot smoking. i am not talking the early 20s fascination we all have with 'getting hammered' i am talking the life long intoxication glory making. smoking weed, or drinking isn't a life long decision, its a hobby, at best a habit. smoke your weed, have your beer, then go the hell to bed, wake up, and try to make it legal, other than that stop trying to demonstrate how it is a better way of life. 'you noob'

    • Alex

My Comments on the film: Marijuana is a passion of mine, both in research and pleasurable consumption. As with Doug Benson's "Super High Me", this is the story of only one user. Cannabis is such that the effects upon one person can be wildly different than the effects on another. The most common are: euphoria, sleepiness, and increased appetite.

Increasing the level of THC without respectively increasing or decreasing the level of CBD can cause the user discomfort.

My Main Purpose for leaving this comment: I think the above link is broke here is another one: http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/educational/watch/v69662129CxM7XcE

    • The Tay

Myself, i have no issue with weed, except for the culture that has developed from it. before i am attacked, its more a governmental fault that its getting the cultural attention it is. its a "dont look in the forbidden box" mentality that they created. weed is no worse than the alchohol that i and most other people drink. its in fact medically better. but we live in a society that is urgently trying to medicate itself. in my opinion weed should be legalized. but the thing is that the subculture (that has yes, attracted my attention to this forum. my original intent was to fault it) that is simply and no further than "weed should be legal because i want it". as for the rest of you, who are arguing for the confusion as to what the problem is in the first place…good for you. fight on. but people who are simply going through extended teenage rebellion? research. learn. and please find passions beyond weed. its shouldn't dominate your life, just like beer shouldn't dominate mine. i am sure most successful marijuana enthusiasts would agree with me just like there are social drinkers and drunks, there are casual weed smokers, and pot heads.

What a ridiculous comedy this program was.

It was the modern tv version of "Reefer Madness"

The "journalist" was obviously wine and cigarette induced star of a fake test of what they call "medical marijuana"

It was more like something the local police station made up at lunch time to back up their next weed grower bust.

I have been around this plant (all types and strains) since 1975 and every day since 1979

Never once did I turn into a giggling fruit for no reason like she did just sitting in a chair faking her response to smoking one kind and her near insanity the other time.

I never once went into that "munchie" mode because of it.

Humans have been known to eat since birth and when they get together they tend to sit around and eat and drink and do what ever they have to do in their paradigm.

Yeah they all have a different taste.

Yeah hashish is more powerful and tasteful

(gee I wonder why that is)

And yeah it has been getting better and more powerful since we figured out it grows better indoors under metal halide lights than it did with fluorescent bulbs or outside where the sun doesn't shine enough to grow it.

Yes we only grow female plants to get those flower by taking cuttings since male plants are not need and the flowers are nothing like the ones on the female plants.

Of course it got the name "dope" since that is basically what people call something other people consume and then get out of control and act like a dumbass (such as alcohol and actual chemical drugs)

And of course all people are not physicists and a genius of any kind so some people are just not all that bright or determined to get anywhere in life so "smoking" or typical drunkeness and drug taking only pushes then down that hill even faster.

If you think that there isn't that type of people in this world then you are in a different world and don't pay attention or even know what is around you regardless if you drink, smoke,or take drugs to get you through another day.

But go ahead and watch this video and you can either see comedy or an informative video from a master neurologist.

(I hope you see the light/comedy)

      Exactly.

Hell back in more 30's and 40's my friends and I would play 18 holes of golf and were pretty good players and would smoke 6-8 cigar sized spliffs made of the finest ganja on this planet.

Of course the other guys drank so we always won our contests.

And then we drove about 50 miles back home and never broke any driving laws (other than the smoking part)

I'll admit I enjoy seeing drinking drivers hauled off to jail though.

I just turned 52 and most of my friends are around 60 and half of us have the legal medical prescriptions but they are not the fake type you see in California.

Disabled Vietnam Vets deserve it if they want to but dumbass HS kids and dopes in their 20's who just want to get away with smoking and maybe even get a State disability check should do it the old fashioned way.

If you must…..well smoke and stay out of trouble and don't be a dumbass and get caught and just waste your life doing nothing but smoke and drink and watch tv.

(btw I usually use the ID "Magic" and thought that was funny when I scrolled down and saw your ID)

My favorite character was the docter. I wonder If she has ever even been in a room where someone smoked it. She clearly has no idea what she is talking about and is basically copying something she read somewhere. To me it is like reporting whats happening in Sierra Leone while in New York the reporter hasn’t been there so they basically just repeat what someone else has told them and who knows maybe that person hasn’t even been there. This doc is a little ridiculous not that I expected a fair assessment of the situation from BBC. I think ones paycheck relies on being biased there from what I have seen.

Wow what an intelligent comment… I don’t think you realize the amount of good medicinal marijuana does and it’s because of ignorant people like you that everyone else is deprived of it.
