Stupidity it is something in which we are surrounded with and at one time we’ve all probably exercised just a little bit. But where did the word come from? How was the whole idea of stupidity created? This film will reveal the secrets surrounding this foolishness as it examines the history of the word “moron”. Stupidity, a film by Albert Nerenberg will explore the difference between smart, intelligent, stupid and moron.

The extraordinary and at times humorous film explores how people’s intelligence is classified through standardized IQ tests. Stupidity proves at times you can pass an IQ test and still lack intelligence as a whole. The picture examines stupidity within our modern American culture by exploring the effects in which mass media and television has on the American intellect.

Featured in this film are many well known people, Mark Crispin Mill, Noam Chomsky, the humorous and intelligent Bill Maher and of course George W. Bush, as well as many others. Stupidity will examine the rise of Jackass and Steve-O, the role in which religion plays in willful stupidity and the overall evolution of the notion surrounding “moron” and “idiot”.

Examine the world of foolishness with this entertaining documentary, Stupidity. Exploring something in which all of us have just a little inside of us.

Note: A 30 second delay appears before the video. The film has been checked for completeness.

      What a stupid documentary :P

During the first 23 minutes, I felt dumbed down.. trying to figure out what stupidity is? Are you kidding? Stupidity is performing an act, or forming a thought that breaks apart when it hits reality. If you're a generally dumb person, your thoughts don't apply well to reality and/or logic.. Of course knowledge plays a large role in being able to create these cohesive thoughts and ideas. It's obviously often thrown around in subjective situations, since anyone can call anyone an idiot, or call them stupid.. The opinionated throwing around of the term "stupid" does not have much to do with the actual definition. That's just a subjective opinion, that may very well be based in stupidity, itself.

    • Michael Anderew Thompson

"Stupidity is performing an act, or forming a thought, that breaks apart when it hits reality." Yours is the perfect definition of Hinduism, Christianity, Islam or any other form of mythology worship. =)

Vehicles such as television, magazines, some newspapers and commentary are tapping into people’s vulnerability. Nobody is encouraging people to question what is in our mass media, because there would be no control otherwise. Everybody does “stupid” things at one time or another. What may be stupid to one may not be to another. Young people need to be encouraged to think independently, researching facts, not be satisfied with hearsay. Intelligence is something that has to be cultivated, but it seems our culture wants people to be dumb in order that the superficial prevails.

This documentary is highly generalized but, the point of such things is to motivate viewers to utilize their ability to form personal opinions.

Regarding one of the below posts: I was hoping this site was full of enough competent and courteous users that no one would post scathing remarks about another. Apparently, I was incorrect :(.

    • Documentary Log

@kittygreens: I agree with you. Personal attacks, especially without any decent argumentation, is just plain low. Therefore I have deleted it. :)

The best functional definition for Stupidity, IMO, is: Performing or Failing to Perform an act with the full understanding that Performing or Failing to Perform this act will, or very well could, bring about notable harm to yourself or others you do not wish to harm.

It is the fullfilment of the desire to do something you know is fundamentally a bad idea. Now the big question is, WHY if we know it is a bad idea, know it is likely to harm us, know it is illogical, why do we have that desire to do it anyway? It is true we have a bit of it born into us where we actively test what will get us punnished to see what we can get away with and what we cannot. Perhaps it just lingers into adulthood but it seems like our race is slowly but steadily devolving.

In the meantime it seems all too clear that most people would much rather be TOLD what to think and do by the media rather than think for themselves or decide what to do on their own. Why strain to think for yourself when the government and your corporate masters will gladly tell you what you NEED and what you should DO every second of every day and vehemently oppose your intelligent thought.

I have at times caught myself in the act of purposefuly doing something stupid. I knew it was stupid and yet I could not prevent myself from doing it anyway to my amazement. I would consider myself quite a thinker and rather intelligent but that does not prevent my own stupidity at times. So it seems impossible to avoid altogether.

    • Were not devolving, dont worry, it's just what we are as people. You've just been freaked by a trend of thought. We as people don't always know what to do, and don't make right choises, if we did, we wouldn't be huhman, we'd be machines or some other like that. Some people die stupid, as they always have, some people try really hard but cannot make it to where they're going, no-one has been, or is fully "enlightened". If someone says they are they are wrong. Tha's what life is about, nothing stas the same, everything changes and you should not fear change, as it is inevitable. Some people find it important to vote for example, or to make sure people are correct and right, or live as they see is the right way of living, not knowing they would quite surely dissagree with themselves knowing a few things more. And then, eventually everyone dies away and are forgotten. It's just the way the world works, and all runs it's cycles. I some find emotions stupid, and sily, but still feel something whilst trying to suppress them. We are people, nothing more, and should be able to be idiots freely, because trying to be something you're not is very exhausting. And given that, there will be conflicts and that is the way of the world aswell. Some are smart, some are not, the smart ones will take advantage of the weaker ones, some smart ones dont and they try and balance things up, but you can't make an "idiot" undestand you completely, because he doesnt have skills for it, he jsut needs to be guided if that's what you want to do. You cant teach an amputee to run.

      This documentary is stupid.

    • eardowel

I quit watching TV about 10 years ago. I have never been more glad.

    • CBat

Eardowel: I quit my Telly habit about 2 years ago. I much prefer the internet because now I can choose what lies to feed myself… and I have no idea what the stars are wearing this week!

    • eardowel

Ha! I agree. I get to choose my lies, as well.

I would like to be able to watch the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, History Channel etc., but I'd have to pay for 100 other channels that I don't want.

I have been quite busy on this site since I stumbled upon it, as I love documentaries. So thought provoking…

    • CBat

That's all I ever watched anyway, (and Adult Swim) so when my mom introduced me to the site I was hooked! I miss Orangutan Island though… they'll only put up clips :(

    • James T

Mass stupidity is why Transformer 2 the movie is a commercial success.

    • Jason B

At last, a debate about stupidity, the cancer of humanity…

    • Bendik Hansen

That lady really reaches the top of irony and hypocrisy when she tries to quote Einstein about stupidity and fails.

    • Bendik Hansen

Lovely documentary. Made me grateful that I don't watch TV except for documentaries.

    • Joe

This is why I stopped watching television.

    • randomtandom

The amount of uneccessary cut scenes to emphazise issues in this documentary is stupid.

    • elle

I really expected too much of that film.

      what stupid! x)

    • Usian

As others who have commented here, I stopped watching tv and I'm proud of it. I watch the documentary channels sometimes but is it me or the discovery channel for example shows less and less informative documentaries and more reality shows?
(I find it very funny that this comment box draws a small red line under a word if you don't spell it correctly so you surely won't make mistakes rite? :)

    • Capricious

This was a great documentary. Very entertaining.

I know a lot of us who frequent sites like this have quit watching TV – it's good to know there's at least a small percentage of the world who seek out knowledge and a greater understanding of the world.

    • Tiago C.

      Amazing!

I was actually mindblown by this doc. Guess I really wasn't expecting that stupidity could be a so vast and profound subject.

I definetly recommend watching this to anyone smart enough and stupid enough to really understand it.

    • gubzmeister

Havent even watched this yet but Capricious´s
      comment is spot on .
LOL… now ive scrolled down and raelised everyone has `Quit watching TV ´

    • SP

What have I got from this?
      Stupid people are happy.
People who think, or people who persue intelligence, are constantly burdened, jaded, and preoccupied.

Thinking is like a drug, and drugs are said to be bad.

I don`t know what to do.

    • Wise Flow

Horrible, I do not recommend this one

    • Melk

Makes you think, I guess that’s not the idea though right? I guess the world would be better if everyone was stupid. Haha

    • spacebunny

Hi my name is spacebunny and I’m a recovering tv-holic. I’ve been clean for 3 years now. lol

If anyone is interested you may want to try this experiment:

-Try removing yourself from all forms of advertisement.
-Go to grocery stores that don’t sell magazines like vegetable stands.
      -Don’t watch tv.
-Install Firefox with adblocker so you don’t see anything except text on your web browser.

Do this for a couple weeks. Don’t cheat!

After a few months of living like this I realized how much extra ‘stuff’ was invading my life. My grocery bill was significantly reduced. I learned how to play guitar, started writing my thesis, etc. I basically have more time and peace of mind. I wish they would teach that in school. That would really benefit children.

    • Robbyou

I cut my ties with Cable when I found a site from the UK called TV-links. They got shut down, but until then, i used it exclusively for any video content. That is when I found sites like this which feed my brain without glossing it with ads. The money I save not paying the monthly fees for cable pay for my second vacation each year. Imagine that, i found I had a vacation in my budget by cutting out something I wasnt using anyway. I have a 50″plasma tv and I pick up 15 HD channels over the air! When I want to go off my laptop, I hook it up to my TV. Technology has really allowed me to explore my entertainment options the way I want, not the way someone thinks I want it

    • e

this film claims that “the secret to life” is stupidity which is COMPLETELY STUPID !!

my intelligent advise to you: avoid this film, you’ll feel stupid for watching it !

    • Kat

Ugh, I agree wth others, this doc had way too many soundbites, too much repetition and not enough actual content.
I’m still not convinced TV is entirely bad, though. Although it encourages viewers to turn off their critical faculties it doesn’t mean you have to. It’s possible to take some personal responsibility and watch TV as one part of you daily life, not to the exclusion of other experiences. And, it does bring the world into people’s homes, and exposes them to a wider range of culture than they might otherwise get, even though it is dumbed down. Which in a sense is better than the internet, because people are free to seek out content as dumb and unchallenging as they like and bypass the more ‘worthy’ content here.
      …But for the record, I don’t have a TV!

    • mark

      For me stupidity is:

      1. The mental capacity and opportunity to be learn about wide range of topics, but not doing so. And the lack of a logical thought process by which to critically analyze information, leading to an inability to determine that the information you are receiving is correct or not.

      2. possessing knowledge about a wide range of topics and, or varied personal experiences, and the possession critical thinking skills by which to determine whether or not the information you receive is correct and the subsequent actions you make are logical, But still acting in an illogical manner.

We are all guilty of varying degrees of the above, stupidity is not objectively unethical, but neither is it something to strive for.
