Taking Liberties

It has taken the world centuries to fully grasp and understand, as well as apply, the concept of civil liberty. But with the changes and the improvements made by modern technology, it seems like this concept is once again slowly eroding.
While we now enjoy the freedom of speech and we are given the right to protest, there are still measures the government and the authorities have taken to affect our right to privacy.
This documentary takes on a humurous but very poignant take on how civil liberty has declined in the last few decades. The opening scene of this film opens with a protest in Gloucestershire in 2003, where over 100 rioters were held by the police and brought back to London for questioning. They were denied their right to express, to protest.
There are CCTV cameras set up by millions of establishments all over the world, which may be undermining our very right to privacy. We hear of human rights conventions, which only means that oppression is still happening everywhere. The government issues new laws, such as the Terrorism Act or the New Labour Laws of Britain, that others argue, are new measures that may also mean curtailment of our freedom.
The documentary, directed by Chris Atkins, shows a myriad of footage that demonstrates what the film believes are examples of how the world’s definition of “civil liberties” have changed.
