The war between the Muslims and the Christians has dated back over 200 years ago, during the Byzantinian Empire, when the Pope urged its people to go to war against the Turks (Muslims) in order to gain what the believed was the “Holy Land”. It is where Jerusalem is settled.

To the Muslims, Jerusalem was a holy place because it is where they believed the prophet Muhammed ascended into heaven. To the Christians, Jerusalem was of significance because it was the ancient capital, the site of the Western Wall which was vital to Judaism.

Their clash was violent and many lives were indeed lost in favor of their belief, faith and devotion to their religion. Over centuries, the Crusades received much support from other groups and cultures, because the Turks were deemed as brutal savages.

This documentary goes into account of what went on in the history of these two religions. It delves into the start of the crusade and the important figures that lead it. It outlines the conflict between these two religions, as well as the significance of what this Crusades has brought to the world.

I don't like to be critical, but is the audio a little jumpy on this video or is it my end?

    • Joel

I think that there is a mistake in this video, Saladin has not executed the prisonniers , Richard has been told that he did, but he realized after he executed on his side the muslims that some of his men lied to him. this needs to be cofirmed. otherwise, the video is really interesting.

I don't like how they misuse the term 'jihad' in this documentary, once again giving it a violent, anti-western connotation.

      Also, Joel is correct

In the name of God they kill each other ….why ???? Buddhism never kill anybody….open your mind The Buddha warned strongly against blind faith and encouraged the way of truthful inquiry. In one of His best known sermons, the Kalama Sutta, the Buddha pointed out the danger in fashioning one's beliefs merely on the following grounds: on hearsay, on tradition, because many others say it is so, on the authority of ancient scriptures, on the word of a supernatural being, or out of trust in one's teachers, elders, or priests. Instead one maintains an open mind and thoroughly investigates one's own experience of life. When one sees for oneself that a particular view agrees with both experience and reason, and leads to the happiness of one and all, then one should accept that view and live up to it!

you failed to mention Richard's failed invasion of Egypt, nor that the 1192 truce was only for 3 years.
You also misrepresented Richard's end.. his imprisonment by Austria's duke leopold5, causing the duke and henry6's excumunication by pope celestine3 for imprisoning a crusader.
Also Richard later 1199 punished french philip (colaborator in his imprisonments); later march 25 he would die from a revenge arrow (peter basile) at Chalus-Chabrol castle. NOT from an old crusade arrow wound complication you claimed! dying April 6, 1199. His body was then cut up & buried in different places.

The documentary is biased. It psychologically affects the people's mind in the favor of crusades. No matter what the commentator says about the greatness of Saladin, the way Saladin is represented and the way the scholars talk about him, implants a negative view about him in the minds of viewers who didn't study or read about the history of crusades. Every noble action he carried is justified materialistically to view him as a man of no good deeds, as if every noble action was a bargain. The film makers tried to send a message to the viewers' subconscious that Nureddin was murdered by Saladin through a simple filthy way, when the commentator said "Nurredien died in the age of FIFTY SEVEN". The way he said 57 sends a message that he was murdered (Saladin died in his 56th, was he murdered too?". To show that the documentary has a bunch of historic errors, I'd like to say that Egypt wasn't conquered by Saladin. Actually it was conquered by his uncle "Asaddien Sherikouh" and it's not right that he lead a rebellion against Nureddien. Actually, it's recorded in history that Saladin attacked several crusaders' cities following the orders of Nureddien after the situation got stabilized in Egypt. A crusade on a coastal Egyptian city was repelled by Saladin as well via THE AID OF Nureddien.
Shame that some biased people are trying to re-write the history for their own benefit.

this is obviously the christian version of the crusades story!

Even though this is biased I still find myself to gravitate more and more to the various middle eastern forces. (not the crusaders) I suggest that those wanting to find out more about the subject try and look at some more historically accurate sources.

This is an EXTREMELY biased documentary to say the very least! Did it not even enjoy it a single bit and stopped watching it around 45 mins. I have read countless articles and essays on the The Crusades and Salahuddin and watched an equal amount of documentaries and this has to be by far, the worst of all. Simply because the truth has been twisted and history tried to be re-written. If anything, people should watch the amazing and superb hollywood movie “The Kingdom of Heaven”. This movie depicts the siege of Jerusalem so accurately, matches almost entirely to the events that have been recorded down in history.

The writers and director of this documentary should never try to make another documentary again.

The most boring documentary I’ve seen in a long time

    • Majid

Excellent documentary was not biased at all though a lot of points were left out. showed stories from both sides and the real moral is that the Crusade and the Jihad that took place in those 200 years are the reason why the modern world still sees both sides as committing these acts and the reason why such acts are still being committed. Osama’s Jihad, and Bush’s Crusade, it truly is as though it all happened yesterday.

    • Nice

Personally I enjoyed this well made documentary about the crusades, especially because of my overall interest in the middle ages and my passion for the crusades period..if you want a well detailed history lesson about the holy wars from the XIth century then you should definetly see this documentary

      Terrible.

Badly made, and clearly lacking any decent background research.

The worst part is the voiceover: so bad it makes you wonder if the casting process was to find the most annoying and grating voice possible.
