Why are there animals that have the ability to fly? Where did they originate from? Scholars and scientists have long debated over the origin of these species. When the discovery of fossils in China revealed dinosaur remains that were covered in feathers, it sparked another round of debates. The fossils showed the creature to be about 130 million years old and it was the first time paleontologists have seen it. The fossil discovered has been tagged as the Microraptor and is perhaps one of the smallest in the species.

This documentary takes us to the quarry where the fossils were discovered in China to bear witness to just what the experts have uncovered. Presented with inputs from some of the leading personalities in paleontology, biomechanics and aerodynamics, the team would coordinate an experiments involving reconstruction, flight testing and replicating. It is a daunting and ambitious task that is done in the name of knowledge and science.

The experiment aims to answer questions that should confirm what experts have assumed about the origin of flight. How did this dinosaur grow its wings and how high or fast was it able to fly? What are the similarities of the Microraptor to the modern day birds?

Very good documentary. Really shows how the scientific process works and is a very fascinating subject of how flight in birds probably evolved. It also shows hows the evolutionary process takes place very well. I would recommend watching this for the scientific process alone, but also a very fascinating subject. I’ve never been a big dinosaur buff or anything, but this was very interesting.

If I climb a tree and jump down from the top of it and repeat that process all my life and teach my kids how to, and they teach their kids and so on, eventually my descendents will evolve into beings with wings?!!

I always thought that if something doesn’t work the first couple of tries then I must be going about it the wrong way.

That is the issue with oversimplification, it begs misrepresentation. If your existance depended on it, over generations (not just you teaching your sons, but everyone dying who couldn’t) you would find a way to achieve your goal, or die out in the process
