Adam Curtis, a British filmmaker, investigates into how memory management was used after the Second World War in this documentary entitled “The Living Dead”.

Set in a three part series, it’s an exposition into how the leaders of the world try to affect the events of history through manipulation and rewritting it. The logic of doing this is so that generations to come will not be haunted by the devastating accounts of the war.  The manipulation is done so as to omit the evil and to promote optimism.

The first part of the documentary features veterans of World War 2, who talk about the things they have done and witness while fighting the Germans. It’s been known that many veterans have had recurring dreams and anxieties, which are now believed to be suppressed memories of the brutality they have witnessed.

The second part deals with paranoia and schrizophenia, as well as brain-washing and mind control. Were the soldiers really subjected to this after the war? Was medical intevention performed and did it really help them forget?

The last part is a profile on Margaret Thatcher and her imperial ambitions and its connection to all of these theories and assumptions.

This is the first of Adam Curtis'
"great films". This film preceded "The Trap", and "Power of Nightmares". You can see how the seed of the other two films was planted in the editing room of this one.
