Mention the Chaos Theory and images of disturbances, catastrophic weather and everything that can go wrong, crops up in one’s mind. It seems to speak of something that has to be avoided. It seems to bring something negative. But scientist are just beginning to see that there is something fascinating about the Chaos Theory.

How did we get here? How did we evolve from dust into intelligent, thinking beings? How did disorder in the universe turn to something scientists have now come to understand?

In this documentary,  Professor Jim Al-Khalili explores and uncovers one of life’s mysteries. The professor attempts to find the beauty amidst the chaos, using mathematics and science to explain the facts.

You don’t actually have to be a scientific genius to understand this and as the professor explains in this film, much of the wonders of the world  — like the trees and the blue sky, to the humans who inhabit it —  are a result of this  complexities.

The engine used for the computer animations at the end was the Euphoria engine was very shocked to see it in a good way.
Thanks for the doc I really enjoyed it :)

Incredible. Knowing this is all the religion I'll ever need. The truth will set you free…

indeed, EVERYTHING is just an interaction between Order and Chaos. thinking how profoundly beautiful and important this idea is, I think its a shame they made it into such an utterly conventional documentary… don't get me wrong, I'm happy it's out there, but it should be made into a evenly profound and beautiful movie! the plan to do so some day, has been in my head for a long time… Almost done with the film academy! ;-)

Wonderful, the truth is so satisfying…

The more I learn about how the world works through science the more amazing, poetic, and elegant everything seems to be.

Such a powerful documentary, thanks for posting it.

Woah this is really a breath taking documentary

    • ElMartonio

Hey. I totally agree with you on the fact that the documentary was very conventional. I was also hoping for something profound and to give my mind something to chew on.

What I got from this doc was: "There are some factors we don't know of, so we call it chaotic."

Just because there are some very small changes somewhere in the equation that we can't determine, it doesn't mean the big picture is chaotic.
All the Universe is one big equation starting at the Big-Bang (maybe even before) and lasting until now!
When you talk about an equation thaaaaat long, of course it will look chaotic to our small, limited brains. Especially if we're only looking at small portions of it.
It would all probably make perfect sense if you could see and understand the whole thing.

If we're just looking at one piece of the puzzle the picture won't make sense.

Order and Chaos are interconnected yes, because they are the same thing. Chaos is just our lack of understanding of Order.

Very interesting.. it has been years since I have seen or heard anything about the chaos math theory.. One question though.. it states a few times that this is all done with out any consciousness. Even evolution. Well isnt the fact that evolution always chooses to keep the most efficient or best suited attributes and then keep building upon them a sign of consciousness. At some point either in the beginning or maybe all throughout a decission was made that it is much better to go in this direction then to just ramdomly choose anything or to choose the less suited attributes. Even in the computer model it was programed from the begining to take the two best brains and breed them, and so on. Isnt this a conscious decision. If it was just chaotic wouldnt there be different decissions being made for the same thing.. Or is that we all just got lucky and evolution just occured, went in the right direction for no apparent reason and same replication just took over from there??

      A Stunning Documentary !

Though simplistic and conventional in its format, there is still deep insight in this doc. in the way it has consolidated and enlightened the connections between the different faces of the overall theory (i.e. I’ve seen more detailed docs.(most probably on this site) on just the fractal aspect…which is mind-blowing in itself). This is a very useful ‘big picture’ documentary of the evolving understandings of science, math, AND philosophy, the likes of which I haven’t seen otherwise, as of yet. Also, the graphics and animation combined with the music in certain parts will make your eyes water..sorry to be lame, lol, but this doc. is brain candy and you will definately be inspired to learn more!

Exelent documentary, very interseting and when you see it you really want to do sciences

just one reproach: they didn’t speak about henri poincare who is very important in this theorie of chaos
