SoCalled is actually the screen name of Josh Dolgin, who is a rapper and producer from Canada. His musicality is quite unique in that he infuses klezmer or hip hip with folk music. SoCalled introduced “hiphopkele”, which the marrying of different sounds based on hip hop music and Yidding music. The artist is quite popular in his niche and has worked with several rappers and hip hop artists like C-Rayz Walz, Chilly Gonzales, funk trombonist Fred Wesley, and Sophie Solomon.

The Socalled Movie profiles Josh Dolgin’s artistry and was done by Garry Beitel in 2010 for the National Film Board of Canada. The film presents footage from Socalled Klezmer Cruise, which had fans of the artists sailing down a boat in Ukraine’s Dnieper River, as Socalled performs for them.

The artist has Ukrainian, Romanian and Russian ancestry.
