In the name of democracy, Athens, which was the seat of learning in the ancient days and prompted some of the greatest political ideals of the world, had to result to aggresive measures to achieve it.

In this documentary, Bettany Hughes explores the truth behind how democracy was born over more than two thousand years ago.  What was Athens really like in those days and how was “democracy” practiced and applied in the way they lived? Was democracy in Athens the same way we have come to understand it today?

In examining mines, tombs, bones and artifacts, Bettany Hughes makes a great discovery of what Athens’ society was actually like. She presents the voting system during this ancient time and studies how it was hardly a democratic process. She also shows how slaves were still part of the aristocratic lifestyle, or how women were ordered to cover up and wear veils. In this period, too, the men asserted their dominance in every field, and resorted to killing and slaughtering in order to achieve their pursuits.

The film also depicts  the epic battle that defeated Xerxes and the Persians.

Is there a link to the 3rd part? thank you anyway for the links, parallels with today's world can be drawn, even though I don't totally agree with the western vs eastern political system distinction. Historically, the democratic experience remains as rare in the eastern world as in the western one. Even the Roman republics didn't completely address the slave question. Many less known tribal systems, that lasted centuries (until today for some), based on family/tribe elders councils are in some extent more democratic than the European feudal systems. None of course reached the Athenian level of direct democracy nor gave equal representation to women/minorities, not that I know of anyway.

There's no 3rd part: 120 minutes including commercials according to the Imdb :)

Thanks for the links. You should rename them: Part 1 is actually Part 2 and vice versa.

This sucks. You cannot use RealPlayerSP to rip videos anymore. They blocked it again. The last time that happened you had to upgrade.

The only thing I know about "ripping" is that it usually "rips" away parts of the paychecks from people's work.
It's just like a tax : an invisible "greedy tax"!
      Happy sucky upgrading.
