The Truth About Democracy

In the name of democracy, Athens, which was the seat of learning in the ancient days and prompted some of the greatest political ideals of the world, had to result to aggresive measures to achieve it.
In this documentary, Bettany Hughes explores the truth behind how democracy was born over more than two thousand years ago. What was Athens really like in those days and how was “democracy” practiced and applied in the way they lived? Was democracy in Athens the same way we have come to understand it today?
In examining mines, tombs, bones and artifacts, Bettany Hughes makes a great discovery of what Athens’ society was actually like. She presents the voting system during this ancient time and studies how it was hardly a democratic process. She also shows how slaves were still part of the aristocratic lifestyle, or how women were ordered to cover up and wear veils. In this period, too, the men asserted their dominance in every field, and resorted to killing and slaughtering in order to achieve their pursuits.
The film also depicts the epic battle that defeated Xerxes and the Persians.
