The Union: The Business Behind Getting High

British Columbia’s most profitable trade isn’t tourism, nor it’s agriculture or fishing industry. It is, in fact, the marijuana trade that earns its businessmen billions of dollars every year. Some call this illegal trade in British Columbia as “The Union” with its exports drawing some 85% of the trade in the United States and it’s also growing internationally.
What used to be known as recreational in the 60′s is now an empire with a business that is reportedly making about $7 Billion in sales yearly.
Filmmaker Adam Scorgie expores the world of the illegal marijuana trade and its underground market, in the hopes of shedding light to how this has grown in to such a vast empire. The crew talks to everyone involved, which includes the growers and suppliers, as well as economists, police officers and politicians. The film also features pop icons, and touches on the cause and effect of marijuana use, not just to the one addicted to it, but to all those involved in the business.
How is this trade flourishing when it is underground and illegal?
