This documentary film is about Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who were two young and skilled climbers  at the prime of their lives. Simpson and Yates set out to embark on a climb of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes, which is a known for its treacherous surroundings. The two have never climbed this before, and yet because they were trained climbers, the three day ascent would have to be an easy challenge.

Except that disaster struck and the two were in a remote part of the slope. Simpson fell and broke his legs and rescue teams were nowhere in sight.

The two then decided to go down together, despite their situation. The descent was painful and dangerous, bordering on deadly. One wrong move by Yates, who was helping Simpson 300 feet down, and it could permanently seal their fate.

This documentary is a re-telling of how these two brave men survived their ordeal, in the hopes of inspiring, as well as educating the viewers . Narrated by Kevin MacDonald, “Touching The Void” is actually based on Simpson’s book. The film debuted in the 2003 Toronto Film Festival to good reviews.

What testament to the human spirit! I cried and laughed at the same time. Too see these men endure something that most of us will never experience and yet share their living on the edge experience surely made me appreciate life. I wept with joy!
