Undefeated (OSCAR REVIEWS)

Undefeated is a documentary nominated for an OSCAR. This is the third of my series on the nominees. Here is the first and the second in my series.
I must admit that on the surface Undefeated is a subject that I care very little about: American Football. And so I was not excited to see this documentary. The only thing driving me on was a desire to see all of the Documentary nominations so that I could write about them for you. Well, big surprise: I didn’t enjoy the football scenes. I find it more savage than watching a war zone. In many ways, it is: the linebackers are tanks. The quarterback is the team leader in the mission. The Coach is the general. In that sense, it’s fascinating. But the game itself? Boring!
However, this is not really a documentary about the game of football. This is a documentary about character: a universally accessible subject. And this documentary is a winner.
In many ways, I see parallels with the Al Pacino film: “Any Given Sunday.” Pacino was the coach in that film. In this documentary, Bill Courtney is the couch. He takes an underdog football team and tries to reverse their fortunes.
